Before I start I did search and did not find the answers I was looking for.

What makes a silencer......silence?
Can someone explain the anatomy?

There are a ton of factors, but it all really boils down to taming the expanding gasses from the burning gun powder.  The gasses expand into the recesses of the silencer, rather than rapidly expanding outside the barrel.
