I have a sub 2000 with a very low serial number. When I bought it used the guy at the gun store said that it uses Beretta magazines. The magazines are not Beretta, Sig, or Smith and Wesson. Do I have one that has a proprietary magazine?

The magazine that came with it holds about 18 rounds and is all metal with no markings except for USA magazine is stamped on the baseplate.   It extends about 1 1/2 inches below the handgrip.

Sounds like a Glock magazine version.

Pics would be helpful.  Other than that we are all guessing

Not the glock version.

The magazine it came with works fine, I just want another that is flush with the grip.

ETA: I really want to put in the sig or beretta magazine catch as I have lots of those.  Will call keltec tomorrow, I only saw gen2 parts in their website.

That's an aftermarket S&W 59 series magazine.

The magazine did not fit in a few 3/4 digit s&w pistols.  Tried a 696 and 6906 among couple others.  The magazine is a hair too long(front-back) to fit.  It is a cheap usa mag...

Anybody know if keltec still sells gen1 magazine catches?  Are they the only place to get them?

The Sub2000 you have uses fullsize 59xx series mags. The 6906 is the compact and will not fit. You can switch the mag catch on yours and make it work with Beretta or Sig Mags.

It's been a while since I had any 3rd gen pistols, but I thought you could use full size 59 series mags in a 69 series gun, they just hang down longer like using a GLOCK 17 mag in a 19?

Yes, your can use Fullsize mags in a compact.

If the mag he has is aftermarket junk that could be the problem.

last I looked KT still sold replacement mag catches for gen I subs.

Mine is a gen II for Beretta mags, and some of my Beretta mags were cut to run in a Sig I no longer have. Both of them are cut much lower than what you have pictured, so S&W 59 is probably correct.

Of the 3, Beretta 92 mags are probably the cheapest, so unless you have S&W mags lying around converting to Beretta would make the most sense. And gives you the option of factory 30s, 20s & flush 18s & 17s as well. All factory Beretta mags are made by Mec Gar.

I called keltec, apparently some very early sub2000 were made for p11 magazines.  Mine is very early, SN is around 1000.  Guy I spoke with could've looked it up by SN, but I didn't have my SN handy.

I looked online, apparently p11 magazines are the same as SW 59 series magazines?

Anyhow, he transferred me to a lady at the front desk who can take an order for gen1 parts over the phone.  Left voicemail but she never called me back so I'll order it Monday.

Yes, the P11 uses S&W 59 Series magazines as the base of the design. When the P11 came out, the S&W 5906 was still a popular duty pistol for cops and the P11 was Kel-Tec's first 9mm pistol. They marketed it at first towards LEOs as an off duty/back up gun and designed it to work with the 59 Series magazines since plenty of agencies issued a 9mm S&W 3rd Gen Pistols. The idea was much like the Glock 26 and a Glock 17. Keep the smaller flush mag in the gun and use the full size duty pistol mags as a back up.

Here's a Kel-Tec P11 with a S&W 5906 magazine inserted.

Here's a P11 with the OEM magazine.

Mec-Gar makes the OEM mag. It is shorter in length than a 5906 magazine.

Here's a P11 with a S&W Model 59,and a Sub 2000.

In case it helps anybody, Robin at x121 can take your order for gen1 sub2000 parts.  I have a beretta and sig mag catch in the mail now.

So I got the magazine catches in, they don't fit my gun.

In case it helps anybody:  some of the very early Gen1 sub 2000's had a proprietary mag catch that use a Smith & Wesson 59 series magazines only. This catch looks just like the Glock magazine catch, except the Glock magazine catch has two bumps molded onto it so you can tell the difference.

So the guy in here who said that the one I had on the picture was a Smith & Wesson magazine was correct. I have not determined if you can swap this early magazine catch up for the new were interchangeable ones.   My serial number is below 2000 if that helps anybody.

Got the new catch, it fits in the original sub2000 that  did not come with interchangable magazine catches.  Keltec sent me the plastic part free, can't beat that service!

Picture below for reference.  The original catches (the one without screw holes) are s&w 5906 magazines only and mine was very worn where the magazine notch contacts it.  To swap all you need is the plastic piece and the desired metal latch.

People knock Kel-Tec all the time. They make gopd stuff and have great customer service. I like 'em and will support them
