Auto index means that the shell plate will automatically rotate to the next station with every cycle
of the press handle. I.E. You don't have to turn the shell plate (thing that holds the brass that's getting loaded)
by hand, the press does it automatically.

Nice feature to have, especially when doing pistol ammo b/c it lowers the odds of doing double charges of powder.

I'm sure there are some drawbacks as well... but that's probably dependant on the brand of press.

In the case of a Lee Turret w/ Auto Index, it is the turret (w/ the dies) that indexes forward rather than the shell holder.

I like my classic turret press, but I removed the auto index.  I found that the plastic washer that controls the index functions wears out too fast and screws up the timing (ie die doesn't line up with the ram).  When doing rifle the auto-index hurts more than it helps because of the way I (and most people) batch process brass.  That being said auto-idex is definitely nice for pistol, and if I start doing a lot of pistol I will get it back up and running.  It is simple enough to add or remove the auto-index feature from the press so it really doesn't matter which way you choose to set it up.

Also, I found out that you need to clean and lightly lube the turret in that press to make it rotate easily.  I think if I set it back up again a bit of lube and cleaning before starting will keep the plastic washer in better shape.

I bought a bunch of those plastic square ratchet things after I wore out my second one.  Keep a few handy.

I wipe the index rod with CLP and I grease the turret itself with lithium grease.  Be sure to lube the ram linkage, and to oil the ram itself to prevent rust.
