| 39 years ago I bought myself a wedding present...lightning 28" imp cyl & mod...was a hell of a duck gun over dekes with lead. I got out of the duck game about the time steel shot became law(needed to do the Dad thing) so never kept up on developments with steel and it's use in this gun. I have "heard" that some have had no problem with steel thru open choked Brownings, and could envision having the mod barrel opened up. Anybody with experience in this? |

Try Kent Faststeel or Federal Black Cloud. They both patterned well out of my mod BPS...
We use Faststeel goose loads (3.5", BBB) as well, and that's like a sledgehammer on geese. Both of these are also cheaper than Hevi-shot and other "exotic" loads, but work great. |

A Superposed is not like other typical shotguns mentioned, since it does happen to be a hand-built double with thin barrels and softer steel not likely to take kindly to steel or other hard shot.
You need to use bismuth or other "classic doubles" type softer pellet loads, since hevi-shot (and other hard pellet variants, including steel) are likely to scar and eventually bulge your barrels and/or chokes, so stay away from those hard pellet loads or else use a different gun. Nobody would fault you for not using that gun with steel, but plenty of Browning purists would contemplate insults in your name if they heard of you abusing that treasured mechanism with such ammo. I make shotguns perform a lot better with steel shot than typical factory barrels, but I would never countenance reworking a Superposed for steel shot. Period. [email protected] |

My advise for what it's worth: Use this gun for hunting Pheasant, quail, and dove. It's almost the perfect Pheasant gun, and you can shoot lead shot on upland birds. If you want to go Duck hunting buy a modern gun that's designed for non-toxic shot. |

Thanks guys...the old gun will get a steady diet of lead...us oldtimers need to watch what we eat :) Found a good deal on a Citori Field Grade that looks and feels like the original...yeah, if I really look I can see and feel the difference...but in the blind over rice I don't think I will notice it...and it will eat steel. The advice here was good for what I needed to know...thanks a bunch. I'll try to roll a pair of bull sprig for ya next fall.
