not aware of any electronic ones for $15????? if you are talking about the standard earplugs, they work wonderfully and are worth the money -

The plugs ("sonic defender") are very nice.  I usually open up the center cap/plug and wear them under amplified peltor muffs.  That way it's not the end of the world if I forget to bring my muffs down for the first shot.

The Surefire Sonic Defenders are not electronic. They have a tiny channel through the middle that allows some of the lower volume sound through. The channel can also be plugged to block those sounds as well.

I have the EP3 model and find them much more comfortable than standard ear plugs.

I wore the EP3s through a machine gun class (5,000 rounds in about an hour under a semi-enclosed range), patrolling, as a turret gunner in training exercises (cuts down the Humvee noise and there's less screaming of WHAT!!!!!!!!!!! down into the Humvee), as well as during alarm responses, building clearings and around loud jet aircraft (the first time I wore them a F-16 taxiied by about 25 yards away and I barely heard anything).

They're not Sordins, but they're far better than any other non-electronic option.
