For many years I have had a desire to own a sword.  I like the looks of the medieval European swords the best.  I have never handled a sword and don't have any idea where to start looking for one.  Anybody here know about swords?

I am looking for a functional sword not a wall decoration.  I can't afford to spend an arm and a leg on one, while I want it to be functional and useful, I have to admit that I see little use for it other than novelty use.  But worse case scenario, it needs to be built well enough to hold up if I had to use it for defense.

I am thinking a hand and a half sword would be about right. Nothing bigger.  I am not sure a one handed sword would be as comfortable.

Ok I'm sure that what I am asking for is probably vapor ware , however I would like to find a sword that would fit this description within a budget of $100.00 - $200.00 dollars.

Any suggestions?   Anybody point me in a direction where I could learn more?

In your price range I'd suggest a Tactical Katana or one of the Cold Steel machetes.
They have some blades designed for work that look like swords.

Check out Kult of Athena.  Some of the best prices out there on quality swords.  There should be a few in the price range.

I have a few swords ranging from $40 to over $600, some are blunt and some are sharp and get used for various "things". In your price range you could pick up a cold steel gladius, it's on the "cheap" side both in terms of price and quality, but it is sharp and it will hold up for defensive use. I wouldn't chop wood with it or use it for breaching, but mine has held its own in mock swordplay against much more expensive blades. It has enough flex to survive impacts and enough hardness to keep an edge for casual use and it is easily resharpened, and the overall balance is unusually good considering the type of sword (gladii are usually very front-heavy, designed for simple, efficient chop-thrust fighting...this one is much more comfortable to me). I got mine on eBay for something like $40 just to try it out, and for the price I'm happy with it.

I was just looking into the whole sword thing, found a company called angelsword I believe.  They seem like "real" swords, not display swords, but they're between 2 and 10 grand.  I did find another company whos name I forgot, they made good swords for people training in martial art sword techniques.  They ranged from $150 to $300.  Only thing that kept me from getting one was their statement about how the swords weren't made for cutting animals in half or hitting other swords.  They still seemed like damn good swords though.  They were hand made and had the steel and heat treating information.

Take a look at Baltimore Knife & Sword. One of their dealers is ageofchivalry.com, look under the "Slayers" category. I have one of their hand-and-a-halves already, and a single-hand ultralight that's curently getting scabbard and gripwork done. They are extremely well made.

I was just watching R. Lee Ermey's "Mail Call" segment on broadswords. He said that the common broadsword from medieval times was just about that heavy; large swords were movie props.

And NObody but NObody argues with The Gunny.

It's not just raw poundage, its what you're getting FOR the weight. This is just a three-pound machete, and that's pretty much useless. It doesn't even have a second edge. For fun or just having one to add to the melee collection, I'm all for it - but for a viable weapon/tool or for an intro to sword collecting, it's a shit choice no matter how I try to look at it.

I have a hand-and-a-half with a BLADE longer than that entire weapon, and it weighs a pound less.
