Can anyone tell me if Tops knives are any good? I saw one in a local store, looked pretty stout but looking online they seem pretty pricey.

My understanding of TOPSS Knives is that are among the BEST quality you can buy, Check their site, they have many options to choose from and many materials they are made from. You can pretty much tailor your knife to your uses.
They are a bit pricey, that is why I'm trying to find some of the guys here that have had good experiences with a vendor or store that has better prices.

They are  pretty good knives , a little over priced maybe but they are built like tanks most of them.

I have a couple of them , the thing I like the most is carbon steel blades that are easy to sharpen. I hate stainless steel blades, never saw a need for them unless you are a diver.

I feel the TOPS knives are well made but overpriced.I'd personally look at Scrapyard Knives (an offshoot of Busse Combat) for some very stout and suprisingly affordable blades. Also look at Ranger Knives if your'e heart is set on a 5160 carbon blade and Fehrman Knives has some pricier but very nice offerings in CPM-3V.
An INFI blade from Busse Combat is my personal blade of choice after trying many others but you can't just order one. They release one design at a time and ordering is open for a few months. You can either luck out and they happen to be releasing a blade that fits your needs, you can wait patiently till they do (could be years) or buy one off the secondary market with an inevitable mark up,which on some blades can be substantial.
