Is TPD still selling these rifles? Anyone know where one can be bought? Has anyone bought one and if so, whats the going price?

Thanks!

Lock N' Load in Henderson, NV has one for sale.  702-360-GUNS.

Kent isn't making any more. There was a thread about it, but I couldn't find it because its more than 30 days old. There was one on Gunbroker within the last month. IIRC they were asking about $2000.00, which is about what I paid in 08. There were only ~150 made, so you will have to be patient.

Good luck

Despite having an MSAR, I'd love to have a TPD too. Gotta win the lottery first...

Web sight says delivery in 8-10 weeks, is this accurate?  Probably not, I see that the forum hasn't been used in years.

Don't tell anyone but there is one on GB right now.  $1800 starting.  You could buy 2 STGs for the same $$.

So is it true that the AXR is 100% compatible with Steyr parts?
9/22/2010 8:01:09 PM EDT
[#7]
Yes. Some of the MSAR parts like the gas regulator, piston, and spring are compatible too.  And if you find one, buy it. I've had mine about a year and I wouldn't trade it for 2 MSAR's...

It's true because most of the parts ARE Steyr.

I have an E4 and want an AXR to go with it.  I have seen a couple on GB during the past year but have not purchased it because I am a lefty and as far as I know the AXR stocks do not have an ejection port on the right side.

poopile: You have an AXR, am I correct?  Does yours have an ejection port  on both sides?

No, they are no longer in production.

TPD was sourcing a lot of their parts directly from Steyr, as soon as Steyr brought their own US made AUG to market they cut TPD off, which pretty much sunk them.

Yes I do, and no it doesn't. There is not a cut-out on the left side. You can see a slight line in the shape of a port inside if you look. Almost like it's molded in but never got cut out. Not sure if it could be done, though.

Mad Dog, I've said it a hundred times. I'm sure some of you are tired of hearing about it, but are too nice to say anything... But if you get the chance to pick up an AXR, do it. It is a fantastic rifle. I'm not downing the MSAR, as I have no experience with them other than picking one up. Basically, think back to the last time you heard anything bad about the Steyr A3. That's all the AXR is accept it has a forged receiver and was probably put together with a little more care and hand fitting. I have not been nice to mine and it has yet to complain. I'd guess I've got about 5000 rounds through it by now with about half of those running a suppressor.

Someone say AXR with a suppressor?

I wouldn't trade it for 8 MSARs.  The quality difference is night and day.  The earliest AXRs are predominantly Steyr parts with appropriate TPD US-made parts on top of their receiver and barrel to meet the 922R rules.  The later guns have a few more US-made parts but not significantly so, and certainly not at any loss of quality.

It sucks that TPD shut down and that MSAR was the surviving company.  If you can find a TPD, they are worth getting.

Preach it brother. I wouldn't say it sucks that MSAR was the survivor. I just wish there had been room for both, but it just wasn't in the cards since Steyr cut off the parts supply and got off their ass to field there own design in the U.S. again.

Lock N Load is our retail store in Las Vegas. One of our customers let us know about this thread yesterday. I don't the first thing about these bullpups other than it uses Pmags and this one has a Daniel Defense sling mount.

On another note, we have a full-auto Steyr AUG in the shop and that trigger takes some getting used to.

I didn't say it was better. I just like it so much that I wouldn't take 2 MSAR's for it. It always works, it's very accurate and not everybody and their dog owns one. I mean, yeah I could sell the 2 MSAR's and buy another AXR, but it wouldn't be this one. This is MY rifle. Here's a couple new pics. I did some stippling on the grip and swapped out for a Tango Down VFG. I also stippled directly behind the ejection port, which caused a happy accident. It used to eject to the rear, now it ejects straight to the right. Just enough friction, I guess.

So what would be the advantage of buying a TPD AXR over a new Steyr A3?
9/25/2010 6:42:29 PM EDT
[#27]
Nothing. I bought my AXR from an individual in a local sale and paid about what an A3 was going for. The AXR was available for me to finger bang and take home that day. I would have had to order the A3 or MSAR and pay shipping and transfer fee. Luck of the draw mostly cause' I ended up with an outstanding rifle.

Big advantage if you live in a state that bans the Steyr AUG by name.

So I just got the TPD AXR. Havent had a chance to take it to the range, and wont for about a week unfortunately.

Quick question for you AXR owners. How do you change the gas setting? I don't think I can on mine - please see the image below.

That stainless steel thing sticking out of the gas block?  That's the regulator.

The tab that sticks out towards the muzzle, push on it side to side.  It only goes one way.

When you figure out which way to push it, try turning it.  There are three positions it can be set to, and if you look carefully you will see a fourth position that allows you to remove the regulator.

If you look in the hole on the gas block, depending on what setting it is on you will either see a small hole in the regulator, a big hole in the regulator about the size of the hole in the gas block, or no hole at all.

Big hole = normal gas setting
Small hole = dirty gas setting (also useful for break-in or if you have issues running .223)
No hole = grenade setting, gas system off.

Does that stock look like it's painted green or was it originally green? I didn't know there was a green NATO stock. Nice rig and welcome to the exclusive AXR club.

Kent painted a few of the NATO stocks green, if I remember right.  Definitely a more elusive variant of the AXR.  There's also a handful of 18" barrels out there, which I stupidly passed on a year ago.

Not sure about that one, but my gas regulator is super tight and hard to move.  The mentioned steps are correct, but you may need to use (gently!) some pliers to adjust it.  At least, I still have to.
10/7/2010 6:52:12 AM EDT
[#35]
Also wanted to mention the one problem I had with my AXR and one that is not an "if" but a "when" it happens. The original AXR gas regulators had a bad habit of sheering off on the dovetail looking part. When mine broke, Kent with TPD sent me an MSAR regulator which worked 100% and has held up through a few thousand rounds now. So just plan on ordering a spare one from MSAR right now and save yourself the heartache. The only plus side to it was that it didn't put the rifle down. It still functioned with the broken part, it was just loose in the gas block.

You can also use a Steyr regulator.  I put one on my AXR and it runs like a champ.

This thread has instructions on adjusting the gas system: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=43&t=297070

According to Pete, there were a few Green NATO stocks, but they're likely in the hands of collectors.  I think Kent just DuraCoated his NATO stocks.
