I am in the market for new eye protection.  I have 2 different sets of ESS goggles/glasses right now, and neither of them are really what I want.  Both are issued, I have one set of ESS profile goggles, and a pair of the ICE glasses.  I don't really like either of them, the goggles are efficient in high sand or dust, but are too big for my liking.  As far as the ICE, I just don't like the styling of them.

There is also the problem of needing tinted lenses that function as sunglasses and clear lenses for inside and night time use.  Some systems solve this by having interchangable lenses, which isn't very effectient if you need to transition quickly, and it's really kind of inconvienient.  I have seen that Wiley-X has light adjusting lenses-has anybody tried these and do they work?

Another issue is whether an airtight seal is needed all the time.  As mentioned before, this is needed for fighting dust and sand, but not always a good thing, as when it leads to fogging and sweat pooling.  So after realizing this, I think I need a new pair of goggles, and a new pair of safety sunglasses.

Any recommendations?  I have heard some negative reviews of Wiley-X.  My ESS eyewear has functioned fine, aside from the mentioned drawbacks.  Also, am I on the right path with two seperate pieces, a set of goggles and a set of glasses?

Don't know if you've tried looking for them, but Oakley and smith ski goggles work pretty well and some have interchangeable lenses.  I don't know how they'd fare ballistic wise but if I can face plant into ice or catch a branch in the face while skiing through trees they should do alright.  For shooting glasses I use a pair of smith sunglasses that have removable lenses, they look sort of like the Oakley M frames.  I've also got a pair by smith called empire that I'll use on the range as well.  I've got 4 sets of lenses for each one.

We got issued the ESS glasses too, they were the ones where just the temples removed to change out the lenses.  They sucked big time.

We also got the Oakleys and Revision.

I know what you are saying, you pretty much have to have like 2 pairs of goggles and 2 pairs of glasses.  I had a day set of goggles with the tinted lens and one witha clear lens for the night time.  Even if i wasnt in the turret, i would bring them "just in case".

Same thing with the glasses, if i was in the turret and I knew we would be stopped for a long time i flipped the goggles up and put on some glasses (day or night) .

Its a PITA for sure the closest I have come to a day/night lens is the VR28 from Oakley.  Its great in the day time whether its sunny or cloudy and pretty decent at dusk but you definatly cant use them at night.

Yeah, you know what 'm saying.  It's nice to know someone is going through the same thing.  I think I can get away with getting one pair of clear goggles and one pair of tinted glasses.  In most conditions that call for the full protection of goggles, clear ones will work.  For normal daytime use, the shades will do.  I am pretty interested in the light adjusting Wiley-X's though.
