Okay If I have a suppressor perminently mounted to a rifle does it still have to be OAL of 16" BBL?
IE 10/22 with a barrel cut to 6 inches and a 6 inch suppresser (OAL 12") welded to the end of the muzzle? Since the suppressor is welded  and pinned on (perminent) is that acceptable?

hello. even with a permanent suppressor attached, you still have to be a minimum of 16 inches over all. so, with a 6 inch silencer, your barrel would need to be a minimum of 10 inches long. as long as your 16 inches over-all, with the silencer welded to the barrel, the batf considers this to be the barrel. kirk

No offense medic, but I think you answered your own question. You stated the atf requires a 16" bbl and also stated that the bbl in your hypothetical configuration would be 12".

If you are wanting a 10/22 barrel suppressed you could also consider an integrally suppressed 16" barrel.  The AAC Cloak is a match grade Butler Creek barrel with the last 5" or so being the silencer.  You can't tell from looking at the outside of the barrel that it is suppressed.  VERY cool solution.  Gemtech and Tactical Solutions also have very nice integrally suppressed 10/22 barrels.

I would never weld a can onto a barrel, but that is just my opinion.  It will void warranty on the can for one thing.  The advantage to a thread-mount can is being able to move it to different hosts.  If you are buying a thread-mount can just suck it up and pay for the $200 to SBR the rifle.  (Assuming SBRs are legal in your area; if not I'd take the integral barrel.)

JPrat, i was just wondering since it had a tax stamp on the suppressor and the suppressor was perminantly attached it would be considered kosher. I guess not. Thanks for the advise.

Having a tax stamp for a silencer does not remove the need to have a tax stamp for a short rifle,

if the rifle barrel and permanant silencer add up to over 16" then there is no short rifle.
