do you think it will ever be legal to the normal public? 25mm the new big daddy round?

It has never been illegal to buy one. The M109 is a Destructive Device just like a Boyes or a Lahti. If you can find one for sale simply pay your $$$ for a tax stamp and you're on your way. As far as feeding it goes...$$$$$$$.

Don't look  for them to be sold to anyone with a DD license. It just won't happen.

Barrett might not sell it, but sooner or later one will end up in civilian hands and probably at Knob Creek.

Those C3 dealers are resourceful if nothing else. All it takes is a dealer getting a Demo Letter from a major agency in his hot little hands. It is totally up to Barrett if they sell the dealer the gun or not. BUT, once a dealer gets the gun he can transfer it to whomever he wishes since its a DD and not a machine gun.

Bottom line to answer the original question: There is nothing illegal about buying a 25mm rifle. If the manufacturer would sell it to the public it would simply transer to a C3 dealer on a Form 3 and then from the dealer to you on a Form 4.

Just remember the $200 tax on each high explosive round!  Too rich for my blood.

You could get around that by casting your own bullets and reloading. You could have molds and a sizing die made for a couple hundred bucks. This is a VERY common practice with big toys.

Note the molds included with this baby.

Sniping just got a whole lot more deadly with the Barrett
XM-109 sniper rifle, which marries improved range with the
firepower of an Apache helicopter.

It's not illegal for civvies to own, it's just another DD, however it is in violation of Barrett's DoD contract to sell them to anyone outside the DoD, even to LE.  Most of the DoD contracts now have exclusivity clauses and this in not different.
