Greetings Hive,
I'm currently looking at the Condor Summit or the Condor Phantom Softshell jacket. Can I get an ARFCOM opinion? They've got pretty good reviews on the web...a long way from what condor used to be. I'm 6'3, 230 lbs and I'll be wanting to layer a fleece and shirt (or two) under it. How warm are these, how do the sizes run, how well do they hold up, and would YOU recommend? You know, the usual ARFCOM questions. Thanks all. ka |
| Good jacket. Mainly windproof with some warming. I wore mine through our last very mild NoVa winter without complaint. I am 5'10" 220lbs 46"chest/ 36"waist and I ordered and XL. It doesn't have a lot of room for layering around the torso but, is right on at shoulder and sleeve on me. If I had it to do over again, I'd prob get an XXL and deal with some extra length in the sleeves. |

AFG winters suck. I recommend a merino wool base layer, followed by a windproof fleece, with a hard shell top. You can add an extra layer between the merino wool and the fleece, but it has to be a thin layer. This combo has always worked for me.
The issued hard shell is actually pretty good and super thin. I don't have any experience with the Condor soft shell, but I like their waffle shirts, they are under $30. SOS |

So, you are saying that while windproof, it's not a very warm jacket by itself? I don't have that exact jacket, but softshell materials in general do not have much insulation per se, just a little insulation in combination with the windblock and light precipitation shedding. |

It is probably one of the warmer soft shells out there because of its thin fleece lining. But it is not warm enough without adding quite a bit of insulation for any of the RCs except those in southern RC-SW, all the others get quite a bit colder. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that RC-E is going to get pretty cold. I'm going to try like hell to stay warm this winter...but I think it is going to be a battle. As to the issue hardshell. I'm a contractor...abet a poor contractor...so what is issued...isn't. thanks for all the responses. The hunt is still on. ka |

Yeah, you can get toasty warm in it no problem. You might want to think about some softshell pants though. The Jacket is only half the equation and unfortunately Condor doesn't make softshell pants to match their jackets. ![]() Classic 5.11's (the cotton canvas ones) with a silk base layer is the plan...it's worked well for north Texas winter camping with the scouts...perhaps I need to rethink? |

Fortunately (at least for the summer) it's Bagram. Last winter was a frigid bitch from what I understand. Perhaps I can get Al Qeida to start some shit in Antigua or Puerto Rico. Then Id be a happy man. ka |
