Both of my daughters are recently married.
Neither of my son in laws are really “knife guys” although both show an interest in my blades.
Would like to get each of them a “decent “ EDC folding knife and fixed blade for general use, camping etc.
Would like provide the best quality possible while holding the total price to $100 per son in law
Doing a little shopping on line – I see I can get a Spyderco Ambitious/ Persistence for about $30, and a Becker BK2 for about $70.

While I have a couple of Spydercos-I do not have any of the “less expensive”  models, and most of my fixed blades are ESEE-
so thought I would come to AR15.com for your thoughts on these specific knives – or get your suggestions for my $100 challenge.
Thanks

I like the Kershaw Blackout. I don't see it get much love here on Arfcom, but it's a great knife. I broke my last one about a year and a half ago doing something stupid with it, and right around then NH legalized switchblades, so I replaced it with a Benchmade Infidel. I'll get around to buying another one someday. It was an awesome knife. I think it cost something like $60-70 with a combo edge.

Some favorite blades on a budget >>>

Folder > Buck 110 - $33 @ amazon
Fixed >
1) Becker BK2 - $59 shipped @ amazon (I think this knife is a bit too large/heavy for "general" use)
2) Standard size KaBar (stacked leather disc handle & leather sheath)- $47 shipped @ amazon
3) Gerber Big Rock (SS/non-serrated) - $29 shipped @ amazon >>

4) Honorable mention >>  Mora Craftline Allround - $12 @ amazon

Benchmade Griptilian 551S

Available all over the net for right around $90.

Great blade, but doesn't leave much budget for a fixed blade.

I would go w/ a Classic KA BAR can be bought for around $40-$45 on Amazon and I would go with Kershaw Blur which you can get for around $52 on Amazon. These are both great knives and made in USA. both are very well made and can handle most anything thrown their way. In my opinion you can not find better quality i the price range

For a fixed blade, I like my Ka-Bar USN Mk1.  A little smaller and handier than the traditional Ka-Bar.

You actually have  the two knives I would have recommended given your parameters.   The Spyderco persistence/ambitious/tenacious/resilience are EXCELLENT knives for the money.  I've gifted nearly every family member I have one of them, and they have all been staples in their pockets ever since.  I would go with the persistence or the tenacious as they are a little larger and fit very nicely in hand, yet are still right at the $30 mark.  The tenacious is the first knife to knock a case out of my dad's pocket since I've been old enough to notice.  For the Becker BK2, they are excellent knives for the money as well.  They are spotty and have had some trouble with heat treats, but if something does happen and you break/chip/roll one all it takes is an e-mail or a phone call to get it fixed.

For entry level knives that still pack a punch, I think you've got the right idea!

If your looking for variety though, another combination that I would say would be a Buck 119 for the fixed, and a Kershaw blur, or a Spyderco endura/delica for the folder.  The buck is a classic and has been around unchanged for a reason.  The kershaw blur(linerlock) is a great bang for your buck knife, and it's an assisted opener if that's something your interested in.  The Spyderco endura/delica (lockbacks) line are excellent, especially when you consider the VG-10 steel they use!

Wondering if the BK2 (great knife for the price) might be a little too large for these guys first "real" knife
Not saying they have never owned or used knives before- but I don't think they have ever carried a knife every day, or had a fixed blade they could really depend on
I think I have had at least one knife on me every day - from the time I was about 6 years old-  That was just the way my dad taught me.

I think I saw on another forum that Becker will be releasing some new models -May be worth waiting to see what they look like and the price point.

The Kabar USMC or Mark I are great suggestions, along with the Buck 119- and all would be in the right price range

I have two Spyderco Delicas-and probably carry them more than any of my other folders.
I only have one Kershaw- but very impressed with the quality for the price.  Onion designed Mini Cyclone - As they were being discontinued, found a great deal on them , picked up several and gave them  as welcome home gifts to Marine buddies returning from their deployments.

Then will  have to take the two son-in-laws out  for a couple of days in the field and explain what you can do with a "good" knife.  (and how to care for and sharpen them)
Thanks- would love to see some more suggestions

If they are not "knife" guys the first time they try to cut an apple with the BK2 they are going to hate it. I'd say get a good folder since that's what they will be using about 90% if the time. I like the spyderco knives and I would not recommend anything assisted. Then get them a Mora. It'll do 98% of anything a much more expensive knife will, and do it better at a fraction of the cost.

kershaw volt 2 is a outstanding knife. good steel, great ergo's..just a good all around knife and good looking to boot

or the buck nobleman is a pretty sweet little knife..its 440a steel but buck must heat treat it pretty good because it holds up pretty well.

you have alot of good options open to you.

both the knifes i listed can be had for at or around $30

Get them each a MORA Army Model and a Delica.  You should be able to get both for around $90 total.  I bought both for my father in law and he couldn't be happier.

I purchased mine at a gunshow for $100 OTD.  I have carried it daily for over a year and it has been excellent!  It does get some stares when I pull it out, but I usually get a "where can I get one of those?" type questions.  Kershaw rocks and their CS is EXCELLENT!

I just started reading up on knives and came across your thread.  I love the look of the  mini cyclone you mentioned and actually found a retailer that had the knife still listed at $39. Needless to say its on its way and can't wait to get my hands on it. As for your son in-laws, I don't know how you feel about SOG but I loved my Flash II, great knife and well within your budget. Not sure where my went to but I will pick one up again. They have pretty good customer service, I broke my clip and they sent out a replacement.

I have never handled one but for $69.95 you could get an Ontario Tak-1 with a 4.25" D2 tool steel blade, then throw in a Kershaw OSO Sweet assisted opening for $23.95. Both available from Knifeworks. That combo would keep you below $100.

Benchmade Griptillian

Ontario Rat 1 folder

Spyderco Tenacious

ESSE Izula

I saw that you like Spyderco Delica's.  My Delica 4 is probably my favorite knife other than my Benchmade 710.

I would recommend the Benchmade 710 but its usually about $100ish

Id go with either a Kershaw skyline or leek for the folder, both outstanding values in my opinion.

Skip the fixed blade, they can pick one up if they become interested in knives.

For the folder, there is only one way to go:

Benchamde griptilian

http://www.benchmade.com/products/551

http://www.rei.com/product/787255/benchmade-551-griptilian-knife

Accept no substitutes, the is probably the best sub $100 folding knife ever made.

Benchmade also offers a lifetime sharpening service for $5.

I second the Benchmade Griptilian 551 (without the serrations, though).  Great budget knife of high quality.

You can get it here for $75, however.

Just received my Kershaw Mini Cyclone and I can't believe how nice this knife is. This knife blows my SOG away, guess that's what you get for buying made in the USA. This will be my new EDC, I need the move the clip but other than that its perfect.

+1 for the blackout.  I've carried mine daily for almost 4 years and its the best knife I've owned.  Can sometimes find them for about 40 bucks.
