I have a Remington 700 chambered in .308

Its a hunting rifle with a light contour 22" barrel.   It tapers to .640" at the muzzle.    At 18", it measures roughly .650" and right at the front of the stock, it measures .660".

It seems that a minimum barrel diameter of .675" is needed for 5/8x24 threads which is standard for .308 caliber cans.    Are there any other options for my .308 besides rebarreling it, or getting a different rifle?

Possible to thread it 1/2-28 and use an adapter similar to this?

Class 3 Machining can thread your barrel in course thread that is smaller than that and then pin on a adapter for 5/8 thread.  That would give you the thread you need AND THE SHOULDER you need.  I've seen other people there to get this done, but don't think I saved the pictures.  Send Morgan an email.

I saw those adapters, but was worried it could cause more problems than it solved.

There is no problem threading a light 308 barrel at 1/2x28.  I did. You can run a harvester or a sportsman dt, both 762 cans with 1/2x28 762 inserts available.  If your using a qd, buy a 556 and bore the hole out.

I had the same problem with a savage and ended up with 9/16 x 24

Subscribed....... I have a saker 7.62 inbound and plan on putting it on a hunting rifle. All this is really informative.

Thanks!   I was looking at something that would be direct-thread and lightweight.    It's a bolt-gun, so rate of fire and heat will be relatively low.     I was kicking around the idea of a Harvester, and like the ability to swap out thread inserts.

You can have the suppressor index on the muzzle.  My Yugo SKS and AK both index on the muzzle.  I'd go that route before thread adapters.

No problem. If your looking at the harvester, check out the sportsman DT too.
