Looks like suppressor use will be legal in Washington in the near future, so I'm looking at getting 3 cans.  A .308 rated can for use on my 6.8SPC and 5.56 rifles, a .45 ACP can for use on my .45ACP (XD) and .40 S&W (HK USP), and a .22LR rated can for my .22lr, .17 hmr, and .22 Mag (some are rated for all rimfires).

Any suggestions are appreciated.  I'll start with the .22LR and rifle systems first, and finally the pistol.  Doesn't have to be the best in every manner, just interested in a solid chunk of metal that has reliable connection system at a reasonable price.  I am interested in a QD mount for the rifle version, so I can move it from rifle to rifle easily.

Thanks!

For the .45 Id look at the Silencerco osprey

For the 308 Take a look at the YHM QD phantom In SS or Ti

For the .22 take a look at the SWR spectre or the Silencerco Sparrow.

.22lr - Silencerco Sparrow - this coming from a SWR Spectre owner

.45acp & .40s&w - Silencerco Osprey 45 - Just sent off my paperwork today.

.308 & 6.8spc = YHM Phantom - Good can for reasonable money, lots of better if you want to spend more money.

I'll probably get a .308 or 5.56 can next year, try to keep my NFA stuff to once a year...

ETA: We were typing at the same time.

Steve what don't you like about the spectre? I'm waiting for one right now.

No need to get a .308 can if you aren't going to use a .30. YHM cans apparently work fine but they are heavy. In that weight class I'd get OPS.

I don't dislike it, just think the Sparrow is a slightly better silencer.  On my Buckmark the Spectre is super quiet, I would definitely not get rid of it.

It sounds like you are getting lots of great suggestions.  For .22, I'd go with the Silencerco Sparrow or AAC Element.  For the .45, its the Osprey or Ti-Rant, and for a centerfire rifle can, I'd stick with AAC.

22sparrowSS, Osprey or Ti-rant, and 762SD or SDN.  The Osprey and the SD will be a little easier on the wallet.

Yup, that was gonna be my pick.

My choices would be:

SilencerCo Osprey - .45acp

SilencerCo Sparrow - .22lr

AAC 762-SDN-6 - .308

ETA: And they almost mirror my choices for cans that I have now.  Only difference is that I have a Multimount.  Great can, but not a .45ACP can.  Just ordered the SDN-6 and I can't wait.

Why the SDN6 when he can drop two ounces and two plus inches by using a 6.8 can?

Which can are you comparing it to?

[#16]
Surefire mini. Should be 4.75 ish past the muzzle and 15 ounces. The full size 6.8 is similar in length and two ounces heavier. Off the top of my head the SDN6 is about 7 inches long so 6.5 ish past the muzzle and 17+ ounces.

[#17]
Yes, and in typical Surefire fashion will be louder and $400+ more expensive.

And have less POI shift, symmetrical baffles, a better attachment system, significantly more mount choices... And not owned by Remington, that's the best part.

I'm probably going to use a TI 762K on a .300 Whisper, although if I don't the SD-N-6 will be worth considering. But not for 6.8.

[#19]
Your view on POI shift is incorrect.

Mounts are a personal choice thing.  AAC mounts are better IMO - and cheaper.

Care to back up or define your "symmetrical baffle" talking point?
2/11/2011 7:54:10 AM EDT
[#20]
The baffles are perpendicular to the bore. That means less deflection if you have a baffle strike, less POI shift on average, and higher BC at long ranges. Longer than the OP shoots probably.

I don't buy cans because they are quiet, a whole list of things comes first. I just want them to be less loud.
2/11/2011 8:05:43 AM EDT
[#21]
How is POI shift relative to the baffle stack?  POI shift is due to hanging a giant weight on the end of your barrel thus changing your barrel harmonics.  POI shift is inevitable and a fact of life when dealing with suppressors.  What's important is repeatable POI shift.

RIF.

I know they are legal to own.  Their use is not.  Yet.

It can be minimised. Assymetrical baffles don't help with that. Also the bullet is prone to exit the side of the tube, which is a safety issue. I want fewer than 15º of deflection in the event of a baffle strike.

Repeatable POI shift is fine on rifles with turrets and dope cards but I can't compensate for it with my aimpoint so I want less than a minute and a half shift. I can still make headshots with that.

A .308 can would allow me to use it on some of my other .30 cal rifles later, which is why I'm looking at the .30 cal.  My A/R's are already threaded, so those are a quick fix, and if I get a .308 A/R, or other .308 rifle, I'm set.  Not trying to go silent (I know they aren't silencers), just trying to reduce the amount of sound.

Furthest shot I've taken was 346 yards on a bear.  He's still dead, so I'm certainly up to the task.  Please don't make assumptions about me.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I was actually looking at the Osprey and the AAC 762.  Wasn't sure on the .22LR, but I do want it to be serviceable so I can keep it clean.

Apologies, I didn't alias you wanted a .30 can. In that case the SDN6 is a good choice, as 30 caliber SF cans are much more expensive.

When I commented on the range you'd be shooting at I meant no offense. The ranges at which that effect starts to matter are closer to 1200 meters than 800.

my .02:
1) .308 and below can, 762SD or 762SDN6 : reasons: 1 style mount for various threaded hosts.  also you can get muzzle brakes, flash hiders, or a hybrid.  this is important b/c who wants to rethread all their barrels, so forget about thread on cans.

2) .45acp suppressor: either the TiRant45, or the Osprey45, i'm putting the TiRant first, why? b/c well now it's a take down can, the Osprey45 does have a trade off, in that the serialized part is the booster, but for some reason, i like to know my can has a Titanium tube, i'm weird like that.

3) .22lr Suppressor, i'm going w/ everyone else on this one, the 22Sparrow.  i would say the Spectre, but the 22Sparrow can be taken down easier w/ the 2 halves and it's a monocore for easy maintenance, (only dip 1 part, only retrieve 1 part from the bath) it's also very short and performs well on both pistol and rifle and is rated for all calibers you mentioned plus 5.7

the new SpecWar from SWR is very intriguing, i hope they make one in a .30cal.
