All,
What are your recommendations concerning purchasing M1 Garand rifles from the CMP?

Thanks.

They are the best place to get genuine USGI Garands, unless you run across a screaming deal at a gunshow/shop.  Barring that unlikely event, you should first decide if you want the rifle in .30-'06 (original caliber, but a bit pricey nowadays), or in the much less expensive 7.62 NATO.

For the first alternative, buy the best you can afford.

As for the second, you basically want a barreled action, as you will mount a new barrel and stock.

You can't go wrong with a CMP purchase. I have 2 and couldn't be happier.

I wholeheartedly recommend a DCM/CMP M1 Garand. All of the M1 Garands I have seen at the gunshows are either too expensive or are wornout, have handguards that rattle. The DCM/CMP are best compromise between quality and price, but then you do have quality per CMP requirements.

Don't all vomit at once but my dad wants to buy me one for christmas.  He thinks the service grade springfield would be the best choice.  I'm not going to argue with him.  I steered him to the sight because I thought he wanted to buy one.  He's going to get a 03.  So we'll have one of each.  I really wanted the M1917 but the cmp sight doesn't make them sound to promising.  And heck, everyone needs a garand.  I can't wait to hear that clip come out after 8 rounds.  Given it works properly.  I'll have to start shopping for new stocks I think.  Anyways my reason for stating all that is a question: Are all the service grade pretty good?  Or are some better than others?

Also order a case of GI M2 Ball from them while you are at it.

To CMP or not to CMP.....there is no question.  CMP.

WARNING, once you get a CMP garand, your ARs will move to second place in your lineup quickly.  Once you have shot a man's rifle, you will always find the AR to be something less.  Garands are also addictive.  One is never enough.

I just got my first one on last week (springfield armory service grade) and I'm already thinking I need a greek rack grade to convert into .308.

+1, except that I had the garands first, and even though I like my AR, the garands are still my favorites.

Here are several examples of CMP Garands...............these rifles (except the top one) had all been cleaned
.

From top to bottom:
Winchester Danish Rack Grade (SN160,xxx), grade rack for bore-cleaned up perfect!

Springfield Service Grade, SN780,xxx. Even came w/lockbar sights!

Harrington & Richardson Rack Grade, this was graded rack due to muzzle wear from cleaning rod abuse. This rifle had everything correct except the trigger group. Plus a beautiful tiger striped birch stock. And it is an early HRA too. Paid $100 for a correct trigger group and now it is worth twice what we paid.

Springfield Rack Grade, graded rack because of a frosted bore. It cleaned up fine. This was a beautiful rifle, a late SA, just before end of production.

We have ordered many CMP's and only one looked really bad. And it turned out to be the best shooter of them all. A Danish return SA with a VAR barrel.

If I was ordering today, I would ask for a HRA Service Grade in the 5mil range....or an SA SG in the 5mil SN range.

Good luck!

I wouldn't buy from CMP. It is best to pay an extra $100-$600 for one at a gun show.

Plus, by not buying from CMP, it leaves more for me.

I'm getting ready to order mine from CMP, and I noticed that people often say "ask for a SA with the serial number in the 5 mil range."

What is important about this? Thanks for the info.

Hope this finalizes your decision.  Delivered right to me!

Top is an HRA and the bottom An SA, both service grade, both with new barrels, both perfect but replaced the stocks.  And both shoot like a motherfucker on fire!

Thanx!  they are without any doubt my favorite rifles.  I was floored when I go the SA from the CMP.  It came with that famous 1965 rebuild penciled on the reciever, a brand new birch stock set that I sold, all new parkerizing, and a pristine new SA barrel
