how long does the firearm have to be in inventory before I can transfer it to myself ?

If you sell that gun (within one year from the date you transferred it to your personal collection) you must note the disposition in your bound book.

A licensee may sell a firearm from his or her personal collection, subject only to the restrictions on firearm sales by unlicensed persons, provided the firearm was entered in the licensee’s bound book and then transferred to the licensee’s private collection at least 1 year prior to the sale. When the personal firearm is sold, the sale must be recorded in a "bound book" for dispositions of personal firearms, but no ATF Form 4473 is required. [27 CFR 478.125a] |

[27 CFR 478.125a] Actually, reading the section you quoted would appear to me that no matter when you sell a firearm from your collection, it must be logged in a bound book (one for the purpose of documenting the disposition of personal firearms). The one year time frame seems to be the determining factor as to if a 4473 needs to be completed. I would assume to prevent circumventing the BATFE process similar to an illegal 'straw' purchase (buying for someone else). Edited for clarity |
