Have gun unloaded in a locked, approved travel case. At the ticket counter (sorry no curbside check-in) tell the agent "I have an unloaded firearm to declare". You'll then get a yellow card to fill out. The agent will then sign the card. The card will be placed into the case after the agent has verified the gun is unloaded. You will have to remove the gun and people behind you will see the gun. Nothing on the outside of the case should ID it as a firearm since it against Federal law. The yellow tag goes inside not outside. If TSA screening is done near by then take the case to the TSA agents and tell them you have declared an unloaded firearm at the ticket counter. Many times TSA will want to open the case to double check you've done everything right. Ammo can't be loose, nor can it be in the same case as the gun. Most airlines allow 11 lbs of ammo but check on their website and print it too since many a TSA agent is retarded. After TSA takes the takes the case make sure they lock it with your lock. Don't use a TSA lock. Show up early in case you have to wait for TSA to get around to check your case. FYI, TSA is not allowed to handle the firearm. If they play with it raise hell. It's policy they can move it out of the way to see beneath it but removing it from the case, working the action, etc is a no no. At your destination don't be alarmed if your case is brought to the lost baggage office or some other special area. You may have to show ID as well, all airports are different. Might be best to first stop at the lost baggage and ask what their policy is to avoid the moment of fear when you think someone stole your gun. |
You can have ammo with the firearm. www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm TSA: The key regulatory requirements to transporting firearms, firearm parts or ammunition in checked baggage are: You must declare all firearms to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process. The firearm must be unloaded. The firearm must be in a hard-sided container. The container must be locked. We recommend that you provide the key or combination to the security officer if he or she needs to open the container. You should remain present during screening to take the key back after the container is cleared. If you are not present and the security officer must open the container, we or the airline will make a reasonable attempt to contact you. If we can’t contact you, the container will not be placed on the plane. Federal regulations prohibit unlocked gun cases (or cases with broken locks) on aircraft. You must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging that is specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. You can’t use firearm magazines/clips for packing ammunition unless they completely and securely enclose the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard). You may carry the ammunition in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as you pack it as described above. You can’t bring black powder or percussion caps used with black-powder type firearms in either your carry-on or checked baggage. We and other authorities strictly enforce these regulations. Violations can result in criminal prosecution and civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation. Airlines may have their own additional requirements on the carriage of firearms and the amount of ammunition that you may have in your checked baggage. Therefore, travelers should also contact the airline regarding its firearm and ammunition carriage policies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The highlighted red is what you have to research per airline. TSA will let you travel with an indefinite amount of ammo, carried in a broader list of containers, its the airlines that add restrictions. Whatever airline, print out their own policies and have it with you. Print out the TSA rules too. I've had ignorant attendants blame things on "big bad TSA" when they didn't know their own rules. |

The absolute best information you can get is to call the airline you plan on flying and explain that you need to know the rules they want you to follow for transporting a firearm in checked luggage. The constants will be hard-sided lockable container with TSA approved locks and the goofy "ZOMG there's a gun in here" card. The rest varies between airlines and facilities. |

Lots of airlines won't let you put the ammo in the case. I finally just stopped carrying ammo and just brought the guns without it. Also some of the TSA goons will be convinced that the ammo can't be in the case. If you are bringing ammo be sure to be REALLY EARLY for the flight. My g/f lived out of state for years. I had forgotten how much ammo I had stashed at her house, that was probably a better investment than any other money I have invested. Oh if a cop shows up and points at your AR and asks "Whatya got one of those for?" and you say "None of your damn business" it will be a close call whether you make your flight. It was the first time I ever had the po po call for back up though, so that was kinda fun. |

I had a near-disaster experience doing this. I was dropped off at O'Hare Intl with just enough time to make my flight. The airline counter wench did not approve of my container, but was oh so happy to sell me a $25 case for $60. Had no other choice. I had to take the case. Was very lucky to have had sixty bucks in my pocket; usually don't. It was a M1a with $$$ Swarovski scope, BTW. Oh, BTW, they lost it. They found and delivered it a day or so later, directly to my door step. |
Gargolye you are so Fucking PC that it makes me think you are going over to the Liberal Pelosi, Reid, Clinton, Obama camp. Even Black people call me Honky and Whitey but if I call them Darky or Blacky then I am a racist. WTF over. I do call Muslims Hadji but that is still cool right.
