there must be an easier way to remove them once in place.  I used a flat-tip screw driver to hold the tab open.  Then jam another screw driver in the flat slot, to push.

Is there a better way?

Make sure the pouch is empty, use a screw driver or whatever to open teh tab and bend the whole thing back so that teh end comes away from teh tab then pull it out.  Press on the end with your thumb to get it started back through the webbing until there's enough slach at the top that you can grab it.  Sometimes a pouch is really tight and I need to slip a screwdriver in at teh top and lever the clip to get it loose, but that is rare.

Pull tab with thumb and bend pouch to bend clip out. Easy.
