I'm trying to e-file for the first time this morning. I have 4 lowers I want to e-file. I'm using the visual aid at the top of the forum and a youtube video to step me through the process.

I didn't realize I was going to have to give a specific length for the SBR. I know what length I will use for my 5.56 builds. I'm going to E-File these first. I don't know what length I want for my .300blk or my 9mm build.

Am I going to have to figure out what length I want for my .300blk and 9mm to proceed with those 2?

It doesn't really matter; an estimate is close enough.

The standard length of an carbine-stocked AR is 35.5" with a 16.1" barrel; adjust accordingly.

I'm not necessarily saying this is what you should do, but maybe figure out a common OAL for a common setup (Magpul stock, ~8" barrel or ~10" barrel) and go with that for your forms. Since AR's are so easily changeable I doubt the variance in the measurement will bite you in the long run. But if you want you can always notify them of a change of length once you actually get the rifle done. I have no idea how to do that, but I've heard of it being done.

I have always known to put down the shortest barrel length you will possibly ever use. That way it's approved for the shortest and using a longer than submitted is no problem. Its already approved for short barrel

There is no "go longer but not shorter" rule of any kind, other than the over/under 16" NFA reg.

The reality is he could file all of them for the one known 5.56 barrel length, add 19" to get OAL, and then attach that upper first. Then, remove it and install the 300BLK or 9mm. He'd have met all the legal requirements.

As far as I've seen. Put the shortest barrel length and once approved go to town on swapping uppers. I do understand there is no go longer not shorter rule.

I was just saying it's how I was told and been doing it. My shortest AR is 7.5 I put 7.5. Do I plan on going shorter? Nope this one's it for it. I got a 9mm ar with the 4inch for that. Shorter than 4 inch on the 9mm AR? Nope.

Eta- btw doesn't this belong in SBR sub forum?

You were told wrong. The length you put on the form is the initial Title II configuration. Change it after that at will.

Even if the 9mm or 300blk is shorter than the 5.56 I initially installed?

Yes.

If you make the change permanent, the ATF requests you notify them of the change, but there is no law requiring you to do so.

There's no difference in filing for a 7.5" and later running a 15.5" vs filing for a 15.5" and later running a 7.5".  The spec provided is simply for the initial making, which is a one-time act.
