Anyone shooting this stuff?  I know that it is repackaged Wolf and that a couple years back there were some problems in FALs, but a .25 a pop it is hard to pass up...what with reloading already owned brass coming in around .35 a round.

what problems did you hear of?

Poor QC leading to either overcharged cases or weak case walls.  Their were some guys who suffered case head separation which at the least blew out through the mag well and in at least one reported case seriously damaged the rifle.  This was back in '06-'07 though so I was wondering if anyone had had recent problems.

I recently had a case failure (on my third round of the 500 round case).  No damage.

Wolf is actually repackaged Tula, not vice versa.  Wolf insures their quality and will replace your rifle if it's damaged by their ammunition.  Tula...well, who knows?  I shoot a lot of steel cased Russian ammunition, but having the third round fail has scared me from shooting the rest so far.

I bought 1000rds of Tula 308 from AIM 2 weeks ago, and already shot 400rds without any problem at all.
Surprisingly, I don't need to change the gas setting for the Tula ammo, it can run perfectly with the same setting as if were shooting brass cased surplus like German DAG or Argentine.

I've only tried the 30yard range, and Tula can easily do less than .75" groups, and had produced more than 10 sets of .25" groupings.
Should definitely try some.

Ran some through the chrony today.  2400 fps through the 16" barrel and 2500 through the 18" on average.  Seems just as hot as my milsurp.

Posted this in the HTF, but seems to fit here.....

Alright, I bit, and ordered 500 rounds. Tried out some in a FAL carbine. Loaded up a mag and was making good hits at 200 yards. Cool. On the sixth round, got a blast of gas in the face. Safety glasses paid for themselves today. Looked down and the bottom of the mag was blown out, spring dangling in a quite undignified manner. Unloaded the mag and racked the bolt back. Primmer was blown out, and the case had a blow out as well. Looked around and found some other cases, one other primer was blown out, and the others looked like they backed out a bit. Guess this is why they were on clearance?

Checked the FAL out, everything looked ok. Loaded up a mag with Australian surplus and she ran like normal. Probably have a couple thousand rounds through this one. This is the first problem I've had with it.

Hope you guys have better luck with yours.

I bought some Tula a few weeks ago from Aim - 2 mags through my M1A Socom with 1 FTF, ran a mag through my FAL last night and ran like a champ.  Only 60 rds so far, but I'm just happy to be able to shoot my real guns finally with some reasonably priced ammo.

Well, I have shot many thousands of 5.56 Wolf rounds thru my AR's with no problems.  Same with AK's.  However, I was shooting some Wolf .308 thru my DSA and had a case rupture which blew the mag bottom and spring out.  (It looked like the picture above, where  the case blew just in front of the rim.) I thought I would try again, and 2 rounds later, same thing, but the mag was trashed.  I wrote them a letter, and sent the remaining ammo back.  They replaced my magazine.  I have shot lots of 5.56 since then, but am still leery of the .308.  Maybe some other brand will be OK.

4 first hand case failures in one thread.
Yeah i don't think i will be shooting this ammo. Which sucks because when i saw the price it gave me hope for my FAL because i refuse to pay current current .308 prices. It only has 200rds through it.

I would like to try some of this ammo in my Ishapore 2A.  The Lee-Enfield action is plenty strong, and if something catastrophic happens I'm out a $200 bolt-action, not a $1000+ FAL.  My FAl has digested some pretty funky ammo in its day, from the raggedy Southern Ammo tumbled surplus, to the TZZ stuff that blew up more than a few rifles.  I didn't know about the TZZ or I would never have fired it, but I didn't find out until after my stash was gone.    This is like landing an airplane and finding a bullet hole in the tail AFTER you disembark...

How's reliability in the PTR? I haven't bought my FAL yet and am a little tempted by a PTR with the GI barrel

Have you tried this ammo with an HK-91/G3 or CETME?

Why is there a discussion about using this ammo?  Sure, its cheaper, but ammo prices are falling.  A little more $ and you can get something better.  Lets not forget that DSA recommends that you do not use this stuff

and here at DSA

I dont know about you, but for a few cents more, I'd rather not have a mini grenade blow up in my face.

Just to play devil's advocate all the manufaturers with all firearms recommend against steel cased and foreign ammo, its insurance for them, doesn't mean good brass cant/wont blow up your gun.  The difference of a few cents a round when buying 500+ rnds at a time becomes sizable savings and with me can make the difference between buying or holding out for a better deal..consequently I end up never buying ammo because I'm waiting for a better price..anyway FAL's are tough, a cracked case or blown primer isn't likely to damage anything, a greater danger would be a squib that you don't notice and then fire a round in behind it, but that could still happen with any ammo, so maybe just be more aware of each and every round you fire of the stuff and don't bumpfire with it

Seriously?  Why is there a discussion?  With commercial .308 ammo hovering around 50 cents a round and reloaded ammo/surplus hovering around 35-40, an ammunition that costs HALF as much and doesn't leave you chasing brass is something to consider.  For people who shoot 100 rounds a year there is no point getting cheap ammuntion, but for those of us to like to shoot 1-2,000 a year the savings comes to about $500/yr.  Certainly worth finding out if the ammuntion is any good...

I haven't shot any Tula ammo, but have fired THOUSANDS of rounds of Wolf 223 without any problems (I did have one stuck case in a smoking hot Sig556 chamber). In fact, I've had less problems with Wolf than I have with Adcom 5.56 and UMC 223. I've probably bought 10k of Wolf 223 from Brian at Aim - Aim Surplus is good people!

Tomorrow I'm taking my DSA to the range, and plan on running some RG through it. Its been a while since its been out due to the cost of 7.62x51mm, but I have the itch....might need to try some of Aim's DAG.
