On the Steyr AUG I know that the Carrier has the piston rods attached to it and I know one is attached directly to the piston block, but what is the purpose of the second rod?
Also what is the width of the carrier, or from the outside of the two rods?

Right side rod gets driven by the piston.
Left side rod is engaged by the charging handle for loading/unloading/etc.
Together, they provide a nice, smooth, non-binding way to carry the bolt and carrier.  Also, each rod bears against an action spring on each side that returns the assembly to battery.

For the width, I'll have to measure tomorrow if you don't have it by then.

Thank you very much, I've never been able to get my hands on a AUG and break it open and check it out myself, system makes sense, and while your at it could you measure the exterior width at the idle of the gun, right above the trigger? That would be nice, again thank you.

Just curious, and meaning no offense:

Having never even examined an Aug, what use will you make of that information?

I'm just a very curious person and I like to know how things work And also to compare the differences between Steyr and Microtech models
