Guys...i'm sick. After waiting 5 1/2 months I got my Dead Air Sandman-L in. Ran a magazine of 300 blackout through it and was amazed at how great it sounded. Then I put it on the ol' Remington 700 in 300 win mag. First, let me tell you guys...it sounded amazing. Two shots through the sandman, then I removed it and shot one round without to show my father-in-law just how much of a difference there really was. With the can, it felt hearing safe to me (8yrs USMC mortarman here, so take that with a grain of salt). Then came the sickening part...I glanced down at the endcap. END CAP STRIKE!! I got a light and started looking to see if the baffles were hit and I see zero evidence of a baffle strike. I ordered the end cap removal tool, so i'll take a look in a couple days when that gets here. Now i'm just hoping that I can find the 7.62 end cap in stock somewhere.
I did remove the bolt and did a visual inspection prior to shooting, and I saw no indication that the suppressor was out of alignment. The barrel was threaded by a local gunsmith, a guy who is very highly regarded in my area. I dropped the ball because I didn't no how important having a good shoulder for the brake to index off of was. Apparently he wasn't aware either. After doing some reading, and looking at the thread job, it is very apparent that the barrel is probably too thin (factory 26'' barrel) to have threaded. There is practically no shoulder at all. I'm going to get in touch with Dead Air tomorrow, and see if they can track me down an end cap. It may even be worth sending in just to have them give it the once over. Lesson learned here... |

That would be awesome if they did...although I couldn't blame them if they don't.
This just isn't my week! First I somehow got a maxim defense CQB stock locked up on my 9mm lower receiver (won't score all the way on of off). That's back at the shop now (stock and lower). This morning I hear from one of my NFA dealers that the person ha delving my transfer ha been lying to me since January! So the owner of the shop is now trying to get my paperwork submitted before 41F (dead air Mask, purchased same week as I bought the sandman, but at a different shop. She said my papers were submitted. She lied.) Only good thing to come out of that is the dealer is going to refund me $200. And now this...but I suppose it could be much worse. Could've happened to my 7.62 sdn-6. That would've had to be sent in for sure. But...a positive note, the wife will be delivering twins tomorrow! Numbers 5 and 6. Guess I gotta keep my eye on the big picture |
| Congrats on the twins! I wonder if I I said "show pics" what percentage of the forum readers would think of the end cap verse healthy twins. Lol. Follow up with us on how dead air handles either way. I also wouldnt blame them on how they handle it, but am curious. |
| I had an endcap strike on my Saker 762 when I put it on my AK. I did not heed the warnings about the ak threads and went ahead and did it, and paid the price. IDC tho the saker is just my spare can or when im shooting/hunting with a buddy so I never go another end cap. |
| Spoke to Ken at Dead Air today...very friendly! They sent me a ups shipping label and said to send them the can. Mentioned that .30 cal end caps were pretty much all allocated to cans going out the door, but that they wanted to look the can over and make sure everything was in order. Said they would take of me and repair any damage. I'm very happy. |

Good to hear another example of them standing behind their promises. Reason why I have a Sandman-S and Ghost with stamps pending. |

Update: After shipping my can to Dead Air, they inspected the internals, said everything looked good, and replaced the end cap for me at ZERO cost. Had my can shipped back to me in less than a week. Very very impressed and satisfied with DA customer service!
