No such thing as a cheap UMP conversion.

ED at HDPS is one of the best guys I have ever delt with in the gun world. His work is   the best I have seen. You can't go wrong using him for your conversion. He does great work on other guns as well!!!

Ed @ HDPS is a little backed up.  Expect to drop about 2k into a conversion.  Gordon Miller has some of the best prices: http://www.hkspecialist.net/

Complete conversion carbines carry a price tag of $3975 + $200 for the Federal transfer tax.

If you could get a USC for a decent price ($1400-$1600), bought the necessary kit and parts, and did the work yourself, you could probably get the job done for under $3000.

I did mine for under $2500

I did mine for around $2500 and that was including paying over market value to get my hands on a USC. Right now topnotch has the stock and transition piece on sale for $175, I paid $300. I had my origional barrel vut down and threaded but that's the only variation I made from the die hard UMP look. To each his own.  The conversion process is actually fairly simple and there are several sites with how to info, you shouldn't have to pay anyone to do you work.

Be carfull of the Top-Notch transitaion block, I have had nothing but problems with mine. My rifle was one of the frist 10 converted by T-N.
Check into the new conversion block by HDPS.org  This unit is a much better peice. The price is higher, but you get what you pay for. The T-N stock has been ok and I hve had no problems with it.

Well, I did mine for $2300, but this can't be guaranteed. I stated "under $3000" to be on the safe side.

"My rifle was one of the first 10 converted by T-N" is very likely why you unfortunately had the problems you did. I have thousands of rounds through my TN conversion and have never had a problem. I also haven't read many complaints about them. If the problems you experienced were widespread, I'm sure the complaints would be also.

You could buy mine and swap out the grease gun lower with an UMP lower.
