I hear a lot of .50 BMG guys use mobil 1 synthetic (light coat) for their case sizing lubricant. Can anyone shed light on whether this is a good idea or not?

Thanks

Years ago guys use to use STP. (it had a high % of lanolin as I recall) Messier than hell.

Have used Mobil 1 10w30 for years on every firearm I own.  Go to Birchwood-Casey's website and pull their specs on their synthetic gun lube, then go to Mobil 1 site and compare.  Mobil 1 exceeds theirs in every category including flashpoint.  Next, do the math on how much per ounce you would be paying for each........not a hard decision.

Ok, dunno if its good for case sizing, just sayin...

Hes talking about a case sizing lube......No argument on using it as a firearms lube.

Would it work to size cases? Sure
Are there better choices? Yep.
Asking for a powder/primer issues using motor oil if you don't clean your cases well after sizing? Big Yep

I have used it - it works OK.  I now make my own case lube, with lanolin and alcohol.

I've used plain ol' petroleum motor oil to size cases.  Once, the first time someone coached me, and he was out of official case lube.  It's way too messy and stinks up the cases, unless you like that hot rod engine smell.

fucked up two 223 die sets using that crap back in the day

never used 50cal. but i would say stay away from anything other than sizing wax or something designed for reloading

A $6 tin of Imperial lasts a loooooong time.

This is what I'm using to size rifle cases now.

Just a little Imperial Wax smeared on the inside goes a long, long way. Lubing two hundred at a time by tumbling can for minute by hand.

I use mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 to size .223 and .308.

Is it the best lube? No.  Does it work?  Yes...  Too much and you'll get lube dents.  Not enough and you'll get a stuck case.  I wear a nitrile glove on my left hand and lightly dip my index finger in the oil.  I smear the oil on my middle finger and thumb and then smear it on the case as I put it in the shell holder.  One light dip every 3-4 cases.

Doesn't really smell to me and I tumble my cases after sizing anyway.

I use a motorized version of that. I have a coffee can mounted to a 90-volt PM Motor with infinitely variable speed control. Used it for lubing and tumbling back in the day. Pic's to follow sometime today.

Man is that like a bulk sizing die? 240 cases at a time? That is cool. Does it trim, deburr and chamfur as well? I got to get me one of these. What other calibers do they come in?

I've used Valvoline Synthetic when I didn't have anything else. I poured a little into a gallon sized  zip-lock and thew in a bunch of brass... it ended up to be too much lube, but I found that for every one lubed case, I could then follow with between 5-10 un-lubed cases. It works, but it's excessively messy, a true case lube like Dillon Case lube works better.

I’m using Castro Syntec 5W-30 on .223 cases. I just pour a little into the cap, dip my finger and coat the case. I only have to coat every fifth or sixth case. A little goes a long way. After I’m done resizing I just throw them back in the tumbler for 30 min. or so and it’s on to the next steps. I figure one quart of this stuff will last me at least a…………lifetime! I personally don’t think it’s messy at all. My 0.02¢.
