I've had my C&R for 2 years now, and have only used it for dealer discounts from Brownells. I'm heading to Reno next week, and thought I'd hit up the pawn shops and see what they have. Never having used my C&R to purchase firearms, what would I do if I find a good deal on something I want? Is it just a matter of handing them a copy of the license and filling out a 4473? |

You can only buy C&R eligible firearms that way of course... so the shiny new Glock at the gun store in Reno? Nope. Your C&R does you no good for that. Now, if they are doing it right, you should not fill out a 4473 AT ALL. You hand them a signed copy of your C&R FFL03. They log the C&R eligible firearm out of their bound book showing the disposition to you and noting your FFL # just like they would for any other FFL they might transfer a firearm to. You log the firearm into your bound book just like any other C&R purchase you might make. Make sure you take your bound book with you so you can log any purchases right away and of course make sure you have a supply of several signed copies (not your original) of your C&R FFL03 to give out. Unfortunately few FFL01 or FFL02 (pawn shop) dealers sell very many firearms to FFL03 licensees, so many of them aren't familiar with the process either and some will either refuse to do it or try to make you fill out a 4473 or say they can't sell to non-residents of their state, etc. Some FFL dealers have a really bad opinion about C&R licensees and think we are taking business away from them, etc... Luckily others recognize that on the other hand, selling to a FFL03 licensee requires less paper work... It is potentially one less NICS check they have to do... one less 4473 they have to file and retain, etc... |

Most shops in the Reno area will sell to a C&R.
I have used mine in Silver State, Scheels and Cabelas a number of times. Anything on the list and anything over 50 years old. They usually make you fill out a 4473 but mark it as "file copy" or put a line through it. Cabela's usually has a treasure-trove of C&R rifles and handguns, I find the local pawnshops to be priced out of reality and seldom will any of them haggle. |
