Does anybody have experience with this strange bird?

I'm thinking about maybe buying a PVS7 that is listed as having a "variable gain capable" autogated image intensifier tube. The seller included a blurb from the NV builder he got it from explaining that he can install the VG circuit and control knob for $500

The seller is not an NV guy and doesn't know anything about it. He is contacting the guy he got it from to reach out to me.

I did a little research reading up on some very old NV forum posts on this subject but that old forum makes my head hurt, and the mx10130 search term is so often repeated it clutters the search.

Are there variable gain pvs7's? Who made them? What tubes? How can I tell what's going on inside? What are they worth? Fo time?

Hmmm, it is possible but I don't understand why. Variable gain is a nice feature but not a must have. I love my autogated Omni VII tube in my PVS-7 and use it often. For variable gain you would need to drill a hole and do some wiring. I don't see the point but it is doable. The PVS-7 is a great scope as is. Well balanced and a joy to use. Never seen a variable gain PVS-7 that was modified.

Thanks Dino.

I guess I was hoping for some info that this is a little-discussed factory option or conversion, I dunno. The seller implied that this wasn't so much DIY but a rare piece. I'm certainly not looking to hack up some regular old pvs-7's.

You have to admit, PVS-7's are realy great for casual sitting around and stargazing, having the ability to turn the brightness down a little bit would be awesome!

Dino is right, it has been done but it's a lot of work and as far as I know no one has ever offered it as an option because you have to swap power supplies around and repot tubes to get the pig tail. There is no way to know what tube is in it because it's a one off. If it looks like this one: http://www.nightvisionforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6572&hilit=pvs7 then you might be able to ask the original creator.
