| Seems like you don't see many shotguns with variable chokes anymore. They seem to have gone to the interchangeable ones. Do the interchangeable ones work better, or is it just so they can sell several screw in chokes instead of the one device that does it all? |

one interchangeable choke weighs significantly less than the vari-chokes. Plus with the advent of steel shot didn't help the vari-chokes existence
The interchangeable ones work great just make sure you put a little super lube on the before you shoot then you can be golden. |

The variable chokes were great in their day since they gave the guns much greater versatility than the fixed choked guns that were standard at the time.
But, they work with a collet system that while providing restriction, doesn't allow for the precision of a well designed tube. A good choke design has the angles of the restriction just right for the restriction in use, and then has a parallel section after the restriction. The collets allow variable constriction, but it's sorta like a "one size fits all" situation where it works but isn't a best case scenario for the entire range. I've read numerous reports that while they have the full range of adjustment marked on them, that they sometimes don't have much affect toward the tighter end of the spectrum, such that "full" choke may not give a tighter pattern than mod, for example. Of course, as with most chokes, shot size has an effect so I can't say for sure if the reports I've read where using the shot size and choke setting combinations that were designed to work well together. They fell out of favor with the advent of interchangeable choke tubes because the tubes give consistently better patterns over the full range of available chokes. |
