@marnsdorff how are those mag pouches coming?

Since we’re talking about Nalgene bottles, and I’m planning to run them in the @marnsdorf belt kit I bought that was flagged here a couple months ago, what are good nesting metal and plastic cups for them?

Both will fit the Nalgene 1QT and several other canteen varieties. They can keep them fully sealed up, the Helikon-Tex bag has a little more room, both have extra storage for lid, compact stove, water purification, etc.

I use the Platatac pouches on a chest rig and the Helikon-Tex pouches on a PLCE type rig.

If you want more simple, there are plenty of PLCE type water bottle pouches (from Velocity Systems to JayJays).

I'm gay (just metaphorically speaking) as I don't just want a simple pouch for the bottle, I like to "accessorize" a little. Nesting cup with lid, maybe a spoon, water purification, Bic lighter, maybe a small stove, etc.

Neat perspective. I have another belt kit I want to mess with, but I went with a Carcajou pouch each for my 5.56 and 7.62/6.5CM rigs. Those both currently have two TT pouches, in which one contains both a canteen cup and lightweight backpacking shovel. The Carcajou will be more for quick access, and then I'll swap the bottles out as the one is emptied. So, one covered pouch, one uncovered.

The Carcajou buttpack has enough space and organization to put the other stuff you listed.

I like the steel GSI cups. The one I got well over a decade ago is still going strong.

Toaks 750ml Titanium pots are designed to nest around 32 ounce Nalgene bottles.  They have lids.  There is also a version with a bail handle, but those aren't super great in tighter pouches.

Here's the one without the bail handle, just the side handles.

https://www.amazon.com/TOAKS-TOA-POT-750-Titanium-750ml-Pot/dp/B009B98FGW

These steel cups mentioned above work well too.  They're slightly cheaper.  But heavier.  Pros and cons.

I personally prefer the titanium - not just for the weight savings, but they basically don't corrode.  Not that the steel pots rust EASILY.  Pros and cons to both.

Those are the best two options.

For those are running buttpacks on your belts, did you align the top of the buttpack with the top of your belt so the excess hangs down or did you aling the bottom of the pack with the bottom fo your belt so the excess goes a little higher up your back?

Neither specifically.

You want the top of the buttpack to be the same height as the top of your water bottle pouches.

SAYING THAT....if you had to choose, I would run them higher than the belt.  Pouches hanging below the belt will sag and flop around alot more than the ones above the belt.

HOWEVER, the higher they run, the more issues you will have with wearing a pack with it.

On the belt kits that I make, the top of the pouches / buttpack is about even with the top of the belt.

The lids are sewn on 1/2" to 3/4" from the top of the belt.

They're coming along.  I have your fabric in hand.  It's still going to be a bit, I still have 3 open orders on my own design gear.  Keep having to juggle OEM stuff and filling orders.

I don't want to rush the final designing of the pouches, I want them to be done right, which mean I'm going to need to make some prototypes.  That's the main reason I'm pushing them back until I get done with this next OEM order and can fill out the rest of my open orders.

I'm probably switching (mostly) away from custom orders and doing runs to stock my webpage with  (I finally have the webpage mostly done)

This is the T3 Tactical buttpack, so the water bottle pounches are built into it. It's basiclly a updates version of the old Eagle (I think) butt pack. I was leaning towards higher also.

Mine rides at the top of the belt because I have my harness straps going through both the belt and buttpack D-rings

You definitely want the straps going through the buttpack D rings.  Otherwise they flop.  This is why I put D-rings on the MOLLE buttpacks I make.

So I am running the Carcajou belt and harness. Is it worth it to rig something up to attach do the D rings on the pack. It is currently attached to the D rings on the belt.

I ordered one of these to mount a kydex glock holster inside a butter bar pouch.

It’s meant for those goofy fanny packs, but it should suffice. I’ll probably try to push the divider tightly against it to keep it from moving.

$65 seems pricey. I've been compiling a list of velcro adapters that use a real holster, granted these are for one side of velcro, they'll probably work ok in a JSTA. A few of them are $15-20, the most expensive one save the MARS is 40 bucks.

The tops of my Carcajou buttpacks are inline with the tops of the bottle pouches. If you're not carrying a pack, put it at whatever height you like.

How about more FAG, like a titanium Nalgene bottle?

One of the reasons I like the Platatac pouches is the top zipper which makes it easier to get your bottle. On the downside, while the pouches are well made, the material isn't as stiff as the typical PLCE type accessor or bottle pouches. This is another reason for a nesting cup. As @marnsdorff mentioned, Toaks is pretty good but there are a ton of 750ml cups that will fit a Nalgene. If it's a tad too loose for your liking, you can just add a wrap or two of tape to tighten up the slop.

Another reason for the nesting mug, outside of boiling water or making a brew, they're handy doing your water decon tasks. I usually use a "Millbank" type bag as a prefilter and the nesting mugs make collecting and handling water easier.

No, one really can't. I'm not the kindest to my gear, or rather it gets used a lot, but most folks could make good use of either. Dent the shit out of it? Get another and shoot the crap out of the old one.

That's a good idea with the Millbank bag. I have two filter kits, and one has a Millbank bag. Canteen cup would make that an easier task.

@Lew, the Nalgene sized titanium bottle is made by Boundless Voyage. It's a thicker, singled-walled bottle that is compatible with Nalgene caps, which are best to prevent leaking (big complaint with most Chinese shit bottles with proprietary caps).  Keith is another good brand, just not sure if the lids are Nalgene compatible.

You have a good point about "metal" water bottles or canteens. If used hard, they can dent or could puncture (never had that concern really). The biggest detractor is weight, although titanium can help, it's just expensive. Can you boil water in your metal bottle or canteen? Yeah, but it's often a PITA and while you can rig up a toggle to remove it from the fire (or use a good leather glove), fish spreaders the more common method for those without handles. I still prefer to boil water in a nesting cup/canteen cup and then transfer to my canteen if I'm boiling for purification. The polymer or Nalgene type bottles and canteens handle boiling water better and can be used to heat up water and slip into the bag at night, but I've never used one that way.

My son, (1LT Infantry) is hard on shit. He stole my first Keith titanium canteen kit for field use. So are, no issues. He heads to JRTC in a month, so I'll have him give me an update.

Nalgene bottles are pretty solid for carrying water on your kit. I still really like the old Pattern 58 NATO (Osprey) canteen kit, with a wider mouth than the USGI, nests into a Crusader steel canteen cup, and has a to plastic cover cup. Just a really sound, comprehensive canteen kit.

I'm curious if anybody has seen one of the "Echo" soft USGI canteens rupture. I've had one for a good 20 years and my son's unit purchase them for their light infantry troops. They work well for hydrating with a protective mask, you can reduce the sloshing sound if you squeeze out the air when closing, and if you're not using a canteen cup, I will assume they would hurt a lot less than the old, hard plastic bastards when you have do a hard PLF for your third and fourth points of contact

I've got Condor pouches for Nalgenes on my Smersh. I like their size as they fit the CapCap on the Nalgene:

The Velocity Systems Jungle General Purpose Pouch is a little bigger than their standard canteen pouch. It fits the full Pattern 58 canteen kit and isn't so tight as to make you struggle getting the canteen cup out. Plus, I like the to draw cord skirt to provide some extra security. These pouches do need the extra support from a canteen or nesting cup. While similar in shape and size to most aftermarket "PLCE" type canteen/kit pouches, the material is not as stiff.

I really like the Helikon-Tek Essentials Kitbag/canteen pouch. Very well made, very versatile (includes a shoulder strap where the buckles can be tucked inside the back cover if not needed), a couple accessory pouches, spacious for just about any canteen size and roomy for a Nalgene (CapCap is a tight fit) and extras. The only downside is that it's a three-MOLLE webbing fit. They're a bit unique, but feature reach.

The Platatac 1L Flask/152 radio pouch is excellent for a standard Naglene (CapCap won't fit) and nesting cup (lid can stow in the front pocket). The way this opens, you can leave it unzipped and secure with mini Fastex strap to make it easer to grab and still secure (when clipped). It's also just easier accessing from behind you with the top zippers. I have a Platatac chest rig with two of these pouches, and they're some of the best I've used. They're only two MOLLE webbing wide and a pretty slim profile.

Just ignore the Gucci titanium canteen kit, but the Arbor Arms mini (16oz) Nalgene pouches are pretty slick for micro rig setups or to attach to other types of kit where you have just a little water on hand (HPG has a similar small pouch for 16oz Nalgene bottles).

I'll post up a few "water decon" kits later...covering collection, transport, filtration, purification (mechanical, capillary, chemical), flocculant/coagulant, etc. Summer is approaching and hydration, always important, becomes even more important...

I too am a fan of the British canteen and cook kit.  Yes the cook kit weighs a bit more, but it helps to boil the water faster.  I have two osprey bottles on my homemade PLCE. One with the cook kit/metal cup and one with the  plastic cup. I like the additional plastic cup that I can use as a dedicated eating/drinking vessel while the metal cup just boils water.  Plus the by transferring the boiling water to the plastic cup prevents me from burning my lips on the metal cup when drinking my coffee.  IYKYK.

I’m kinda surprised there isn’t an after market upgraded version of it.  But I guess the Brit military is nowhere near the size of ours, thus surplus numbers don’t compare.

Only canteens I've seen leak are a couple USGI 2 quarts.

Boundless Voyage. Got it. Thanks!

I have a few of the P58 canteens, one with the Crusader cup. If I'm carrying two bottles, one is the quick access bottle, without a cup on top. Not a bad setup at all. I find the bottles very easy to hold, but it's not like I'm handling them for any length of time.

I just got in a Grayl Geopress and was despairing that I wasn't going to find a pouch in which to stow it on my ruck. Rummaged through the spare tac crap bin and found a slamazon special MOLLE bottle pouch with a drawstring closure and mesh bottom. Snug, but it'll do the trick.

I keep my thermal, GPS, wind meter, LRF, and spare batteries in one of those Condor-type bottle pouches- they look at-home on that Smersh rig- and it's easy to grab-and-go. PVS is a padded Eagle pouch with my Crye Nightcap clipped around it. Some duct tape-wrapped foam in the bottle pouch keeps the contents safe from damage.

There are a number of good options out there.

I've got a couple of the osprey canteens, they're pretty nice.

Generally I've just consolidated to nalgene bottles and nalgene canteens for when I need a canteen.  I've also got a few of the older gen (the ones that used Nalgene spec lids) stainless steel single wall Kleen Kanteen bottles in my main selection.  I usually keep one of those with my gear.  It IS nice to be able to heat up the bottle directly in the winter if your water ended up freezing in the bottle.  They're just easier to get and get accessories to go with them.  But I've got the full gambit - not as many different ones as Rock6 has, but the major ones.

For water bottle pouches - I've got a bunch of options.  But mostly I have British utility pouches (Osprey series surplus MOLLE pouches) and my own production water bottle pouches (similar to the old school British PLCE utility pouches, but slimmed down just slightly and set up to fit on 2 molle columns, and modernized a bit.  They are sized to easily fit a nalgene bottle + nesting cup + folding stove or a USGI canteen + cup + stove setup.  They also fit a boatload of AR mags) I also have a half dozen of the pretty nice Eagle surplus USMC canteen pouches.  I also have them on my main plate carrier, main 'heavy' chest rig, and on the sides of my Crossfire assault pack to hold canteens (Nalgene canteens).  I like these canteen pouches, they're well made, cheap, and relatively slimlined.  However, they don't fit nesting cups well.  Which is fine for those uses.

I also picked up a pack of a dozen ACU surplus canteen pouches for a couple $$$ each and dyed them to fill out the rest of my random MOLLE chest rigs, FLC's, and packs and such that I didn't already have canteen pouches on.  Can't beat them for the $$$.  They are also good general purpose pouches.  I figure if anyone ever uses those chest rigs won't complain - they're decent MAV's or Eagle Rhodesian rigs or other similar older style MOLLE chest rigs (or a few I've made, playing around with chest rig ideas) and have a wide range of random mag pouches, utility pouches, etc. I've collected over the years.  Everything from some pretty nice gucci oldschool paraclete, eagle, TT, etc. pouches to bulk surplus mag pouches.

The nicer pouches that Rock6 mentioned, or that I make, etc. are all nicer, but these surplus canteen pouches work great for alot of uses, especially if you are on a budget....but not so much for belt kits.  (well, the British MOLLE utility pouches work great with a couple simple mods)  But at least we're starting to see pouches that work well on them pop up on the market here in the US.

Another options that I haven't actually messed with, but that looks solid, as has most of the rest of the stuff I have used from them are the SORD utility pouches.  They're priced right and everything I've used from them were well made.  They have multiple sizes, but the two interesting ones are the large and XL ones.  The XL ones seem to be the same size as the old PLCE utility pouches, and look pretty nice for that purpose.  The large is sized for a water bottle + cup.  The only drawback I see is that the large takes up 3 columns of molle, if that's a problem for your rig.

On a side note, SORD also have molle pouches for TWO ar magazines that have fully flapped lids + fastex buckles that aren't expensive.  If they only had triple mag pouches.....

Rock - which platatac chest rig do you have?  I've been eyeing the JW rig that Optactical stocks, but I finally decided I'm just going to sew my own up that's kinda similar.  I'm going to be modding my water bottle pouches to work on the chest rig similarish to how the Platatac ones are used.  But without the zipper.  (I hate zippers) My pouches are about the same size as the Platatac pouches.

I put the straps through the d rings on the butpack, but I’m using a Brit gas mask bag I got for cheap. It’s probably a touch higher than the canteen pouches. But I don’t plan on using a pack with it either.

@marnsdorff

Good to hear.

I’m still surprised no one has made pouches specifically for longer mags like that. I know it’s fairly niche in comparison, but there are almost no purpose made pouches like this for 40s or subguns.

Yea I'm surprised too.  Especially with people running FRT's in guns now.

I'm going to enjoy making something out of BubbaCam too.  I'm still totally going to make sets of gear out of it in the future, if nothing else, for the lols.

I like the DZ rig, but wasn't a fan of it because it gets so hot in FL summer and so the less material the better. I put together my own lightweight belt rig on a budget with the lightest most breathable material I could get my hands on. Got around $250-300 in it, sourced mostly from my local army/navy and a member here. If I really wanted to go all out I'd set it up with those VS jungle pouches though. Their kit is really expensive and my own build literally cost half as much, that I was able to rig up two, one in coyote and the other in ranger green.

You should definitely post it.  We all like to see different rigs for ideas.

Go to https://imgbb.com/ and host the picture there  (free, no account needed, and it's quick) and post the link here - if you look at the little icons above the text field, there's one that looks like a picture, just to the left of the youtube icon.  Click on that and drop the link from imgbb into the field that pops up.

What was the overall consensus of the VS jungle pouches?

Was the lightweight waterproof material too flimsy for hard use, is more sturdy heavy duty 1000D material preferred?

The pouches are expensive compared to the surplus pouches that I already have on hand. Just wanted to know if it's worth it to upgrade, or if it's even an upgrade at all? Are they gtg?

Pros and cons overall.

The basic designs are good.

The lightweight materials aren't BAD for the actual pouches - but the laser cut molle attachment system sucks - with the heavy loads being put on belt kits, especially the rear pouches, the laser cut molle stuff stretches badly over time and eventually fails.

The mag pouches are fine, with my only major issue being that the opening isn't stiff - ie, they don't hold their shape when not full, which is annoying.

The canteen and buttpacks look like decent designs (I haven't had these, just the mag pouches) but these have issues with the molle attachment systems.  This is where old school webbing is way better.

Personally I prefer 1000d for belt kit pouches.  The laminate fabric itself isn't bad if it's used right.  Like I said above - it's the molle attachment that is the problem.

The basic designs of the VS pouches are good - fitted lids, triple mag pouches, etc.  That's important for belt kits.

Personally?  There are better options out there.  Though if I got a good deal on used VS mag pouches, I wouldn't feel bad running those. Crossfire has some well made mag pouches now.  There are a few fitted, flapped lid pouches for water bottles and utility pouch style pouches out there that I'd look at.  SORD has a couple utility pouches.  Helikon has a couple pouches that work.  Honestly?  If I were doing a MOLLE belt kit setup, I'd get Crossfire mag pouches, a couple of British Osprey series surplus utility pouches to use as water bottle pouches  (they fit on using 2 columns of molle and fit nalgene or canteens, and are cheap and well made), and either a molle buttpack from me or a couple or utility pouches of some kind - SORD, Helikon are the two that come to mind.

You CAN piece a kit together using surplus pouches - the British utility pouches are the way to go for that for sure.  4 x of the British utility pouches will get you up and running for the back pouches.  Then I'd look at the Eagle 2x2 mag pouches with the fastex buckles on ebay for mag pouches if you want to go all-surplus.

Note that there are a number of other options out there that are decent options.  I'm just spouting the ones off the top of my head.

Thanks for the insight, good stuff!

I got this kit just begging for a butt pack it seems. It's got 6 rows of unused molle on the back. What's highly recommended for a butt pack in ranger green? Idk if I want the VS butt pack, I heard Fire Force were nice but it appears supplies dried up on those months ago and I missed out.

Originally I was intending on this being a lightweight, no fuss, belt rig but now I'm fixing to build it up. Butt pack and a good harness should set it straight I think.

Honestly, get one of the MOLLE buttpacks that I make.  I legitimately make the best MOLLE buttpacks made in the USA.  Cons are that I have a pretty long wait time.  (I'm really not trying to rep my stuff, just that there aren't many MOLLE buttpacks out there, at least ones that don't have the laminated MOLLE thing going on.  I would say get a Fireforce one, but they went out of business a few years ago and I haven't seen one for sale online except a few used ones on ebay.  For the same prices my new ones cost.)

If you don't get one from me, probably the Velocity buttpack is the best option, even with it's issues.

Alternative ideas - go the British route and put 2 x large utility pouches on the back instead.  SORD and Helikon and VS all make utility pouches with 3 columns of molle.  I'd probably look at the SORD ones.  British surplus OSPREY Molle Utility pouches also would work.  You could put two more of those TT utility pouches on it too.

There's a bunch of Fireforce stuff on the Sportsman's Guide website fwiw.
EDIT- the biggest pouches they currently have are SAW and gas mask pouches.

I have this Helikon Tex E&E pouch, very well made. I'm using it as a minuteman style bag with a Maxpedition strap to keep with a rifle (mags, water, need to add first aid). It's got a vertical pass through on the back so one could stick a hatchet or something there.

@Flamingdragon

What are the two inboard pouches? Could you just get two more of those to fill out the space, PLCE style? If you have six columns left in between, two 200 round SAW pouches each typically use 3 columns of molle. Two SAW pouches should easily equivalate to butt pack carry capacity.

That Helikon pouch is one of the utility pouches I mentioned above.  Two of those would make a decent streamlined rear utility pouch combo, British style.

They look like Tactical Tailor utility pouches.  If I were going the British style route, I'd get two of the Helikon ones above, put them OUTBOARD, where those TT ones are now, and use the Helikon pouches as canteen pouches.  And use the TT ones as utility pouches.

But like I said in my original post, two more of the TT utility pouches would work too.

Pros and cons to ALL of these options.

I assume you mean the USGI MOLLE 2 buttpacks, the long skinny ones?

Technically those would work.  However, there are only 2 MOLLE attachment straps on it, and it would flop around a good bit.  But more importantly, I don't know if it would hold the weight of a pack resting on top of it very well, with only 2 straps.

If you are talking about an old ALICE style buttpack, same issues.  Trying to make it work with MOLLE would make it flop around a good bit, and your attachment options are limited and I don't know how well it would hold up to the pack weight.

If you are going to do a real set of belt kit, then do it right.  If those were my options above - I'd much rather go the British utility pouch style setup.

But yes, I'm not trying to poopoo on your suggestion, they WOULD work.  And are options.  I ALMOST suggested in my first post that a temporary solution would be to throw one of the MOLLE 2 buttpacks on there until he could get something nicer, since they are so cheap.

Lol, they're not even that cheap anymore. They work ok as a shelf, depends on what you put in them.

The ACU ones are cheap.  You can dye them to a decent color.

I didn't mean the pouch wouldn't work well as a shelf, I mean with only 2 attachment points, it would be weak and put alot of strain on those 2 columns of molle.

Yeah, I was agreeing with you
Although fwiw ive rucked and patrolled a lot of miles with a flc in jungles with assault packs and/or rucks and never had an issue with the settup.

I do prefer ones you can also strap to d rings on the top though

Probably the most versatile pouch made in the MOLLE II series.  The MOLLE II Buttpack.
