| I had read that the FAL exibits something called "verticle stringing"...what is veticle stringing and how does it affect accuracy? |
|
It means the overall group the rifle produces is taller than it is wide. ETA: Barrels vibrate like a tuning fork as soon as the hammer strikes the primer, and if the bullet does not exit at a null point in the vibration, or at the same point in the wave, you get stringing. This is usually inidicative of inconsistent barrel pressure or harmonics, on a bolt gun anyway. I would imagine on an FAL, with the gas block, piston, bipod, carrying handle, and whatever the hell else is hung out there they would be "fun" to get in tune. The same can be said for the M1A and M1 series of rifles too, regarding the cluttered barrels. They shoot well, so maybe there is some magic for the FAL, too. |
|
Some do, some don't. Fal's like the shorter barrels, and a tight bolt/carrier. Like every other rifle I have ever fired, when the barrel gets hot as hell, the groups change. It's pretty easy to get a .308 barrel smoking with a few mags. The short barrels don't change as much. |
| I've found vertical stringing to occur when shooting it from sandbag rest. If this is the case with you, try using only one sandbag, rest your support hand on the sandbag, then lay the rifle forearm on your hand. Don't grip the handguards when firing. Not discounting what others have said but the thin FAL barrel exaggerates things related to barrel pressure and recoil. |

Quoted:
Vertical stringing is the result of mis-matched carrier/bolt. Play between the two causes pressure exerted on the bolt by the magazine to impart deviating pressure on the chambered round. It can also occur shooting from the barrel mounted bipod. Is this the case with any semi-auto or just FALs in particular? |

Any tilting-bolt mag-fed rifle is likely to exhibit the same tendency if the bolt/carrier don't fit right. |
