So I'm going to take some photos and track along as I work on my Multicam SBR project. This sort of came around in a round about fashion. I sold my 5.56 carbine a couple months ago to fun a secondary SBR upper in 5.56 for my SBR lower that had a dedicated 6.8 upper. I later decided I didn't want to persue 6.8, so instead I simply decided to rebarrel it. Well, ripping out the barrel, I decided that while it was broken down, I might as well do some experimenting.

After seeing fivepointoh's tutorial, I decided I'd give it a shot.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the exact paints he'd listed in his tutorial, so I had to deviate. Being partially red/green color blind didn't help when it came to selecting colors, so I called in some reinforcements to help me match paints to some multicam I had laying around.

I'll do my best to keep this updated.

Stage 1.

I bought some biodegradable generic "Green Cleaner" on the basis that it wouldn't leave residue. I began by completely breaking down the rifle and cleaning all the exterior parts that were to be painted. Wanting a really solid base coat, I then taped off parts I didn't want to mess with tolerances (Threading, holes, etc) I ended up spraying the first coat last night and hanging them in the apartment to dry overnight. After getting back from school, I applied a second coat to the larger pieces and set up a spray pan for the smaller stuff.

A picture of the bigger stuff with the second coat applied. I was using a Rustoleum as a base, and it has a tendancy to run. I only had a single instance of running, which happened to be on the upper surface of the lower reciever near the slot the bolt catch lever resides in, which isn't a huge deal.

Hopefully this stuff will dry tonight, in which case I'll mock it up and begin laying down secondary colors.

Updates imminent.

Update #1

I got the rifle minimally assembled this morning for painting. I dusted it with the lighter green that I bought, and while it's a little more green than I'd like, it's just one more color in the overall scheme. In all likelyhood, I'll simply end up adding more of the original tan back into the pattern later.

I also cut out my stencils this morning, and somewhere along the line decided to keep both the positive and negative cut outs, which ended up saving my ass on little parts like the EoTech covers and the Redimag.

Here's layer 1 on the rifle itself. This is the darker of the two green variants I purchased.

If anyone would like to add comments or ideas, I'm always open to them.

Off to watch some paint dry!

Some more layers: This was dusted, which I think sucked a lot of the dimension out of the colors. I'll probably be going over it with dark browns and light tan again to make it pop.

A current comparison: As stated, I need to bring out the darks and lights.

Looking good so far.  Hell, I would leave it with a muted look.

Hey Jinx!

Thanks! I wasn't sure about it. A friend suggested I try a darker brown, so I went and picked one up and it made a ton of difference. I couldn't find a very good match for the real light tan in the pattern, so I ended up having to blend it while stenciling, which was a PITA. I wanted a lot more, as I think it adds a ton of depth, but for now, this'll do.  Next time, I'll definately have the correct colors before starting.

Here's the current and probably final look. I'm still working on the rail covers, so bare with me. Getting pattern to hold on the rail is near impossible. I'll get the rest of it fully assembled tomorrow when I have access to a vice. I'll also try to get the rail covers and the Larue foregrip down. Hell, maybe even a mag or two... (I discovered I was able to work pretty stinking quick during the day when it's warm out.)

I'm not going to lie, it's sort of a scary prospect. I got half way through with this and had a "WTF am I doing?!" moment, but ultimately, I'm happy with it. I definately wish I knew how to airbrush, as I'd love to try duracoat sometime.

Finished it. Took a while, but I'm definately happy with the outcome!
