I picked up this Winchester a few years ago and stuck it in the safe. Looking at the stock, it has the Benecia Arsenal cartouche on the left side of the stock. Can someone confirm the cartouche on the stock? I was under the impression that it would also be marked with the inspector's initial (BA-B) or the maker's mark. Maybe this was a post-war rearsenal (09-51) and that was why? |

Barrel is marked from Springfield Armory dated Sept 1951.
Stock marking is an arsenal rebuild mark. Look for the other markings on the rifle. Pull the reciver out of the stock and look at the legs of the receiver for electropencil markings. (SA 64. LEAD 66. etc....) In addition to the receiver, the Garand will have most of its parts marked with maker and drawing numbers, will show who made each part. Trigger housing, hammer, trigger, barrel, op-rod, safety, follower, bolt, etc... |

Thanks for the reply. Is it customary to have only BA? I was under the impression it should have the inspector as well (ie. BA-B). What about the maker's mark? As for the drawing numbers... Housing: Hammer: Safety: Trigger guard: Op rod: Unknown: Bolt: WRA also, but didn't take a pic. Rear sight: |

Typical post ww 2 rebuild just happened to get a fair number of wra parts after rebuild . While original garands up to the early fifties would have inspectors stamps ( such as SA over gaw ) after that the got a defense acceptance stamp- three stars over an eagle.
I believe the BA stands for benecia arsenal |
