I am researcing the FN PS90, just wondering if there is any advantage over the AR15 platform or piston driven AR15 platforms? I have seen quite a few FN ps90 for sell, just wondering if the owners have re-thought the caliber? Any chance the ammo will ever come down to normal levesl? Any personal experience or what do you think of the future of the FN PS90 in the USA? parts? etc...

Thanks,

It's a weapon system designed for a different role than an AR15.  Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oil filters.  It fills a niche role, and when applied to that role, it fills it well.  I own mine as something fun, different from an AR15.

Ammo prices are already reasonable.  During the massive ammo run-up, I was able to reliably get 5.7 ammo for $20/50.  It still is that price.  I bought 150 rounds today at my local big box store because I wanted a little extra.  The same amount of 5.56 is still $10 more today.

Parts will remain available as long as FN Herstal is around.  The unstated warranty is basically, "if it breaks, we'll fix it."  If someone is into owning a whole pile of spares like an AR15, it won't be their platform.

Not a fair comparison, and this thread is likely to turn into a troll fest.

I totally agree with Findsman, great summary!!

There currently is at least one Ammo maker making hotter rounds to make the 5.7 PS90 more competitive with the AR, but if you use it it will void FNH's warranty (IF they can tell you used it).  I won't get into the ammo options, etc., as it can be a touchy subject for several reasons.  All I will say is hotter 5.7 rounds are legal in the PS90, and NOT in the fiveseven pistol, so therefore the hotter stuff is very restricted and near impossible to find.

I own 5 AR-15's, and I love to shoot them and prefer it as my go-to rifle.  What I like about the PS90 is the unique system it is, it's fun to shoot, and it's  a quality gun.  It seems like everyone has an AR nowdays, the PS90 has a coolness factor to it because it's so different.  If Obama does eventually institute an assault weapon ban, the PS90 will become VERY rare and will most likely increase in price more significantly than an AR also.

On a side note, my wife loves to shoot it also, and it may replace her tricked out Beretta Storm carbine as her home defense weapon.. One more range day and I think she'll change for the PS90.  It's just a fun, accurate gun to shoot!

Ditto as above statements I own both guns and each one is good in my opinion. I know I have stated this in previous threads but I have used my ps90 as a hunting weapon also and it works great on coyotes. Yes i know crazy but so is life. Here are some pics for your enjoyment and mine:

The others have summed it up well. Gun has its place and preforms well. Personally I want one but I was holding off for them to get closer to a grand and then the gun scare happened. If I personally buy one though it will be an SBR. I've had the chance to shoot 2 different ones that have been converted to SBR's and they are a blast. It is just a fun little gun to shoot. One of the 2 I've shot got converted to full auto by the range that rents it. They don't have the correct fire group in it though so it only does safe/auto. I will say that thing in full auto is way too much fun.

I thought it was illegal to have an auto PS90, since the P90 didn't exist before 1986?

Range is a class 3 dealer. They got one of the local leo's to sign off saying they wanted to demo it. They then were legally able to convert it and can retain it after the demo is over. The gun is marked as a post-may demo. It can only be transfered to another class 3 dealer or to a government agency.

Drats.  I've been eyeing the PS90 for a while and would love for it to have a fun switch.

You could register it as a short-barreled rifle though, and have the barrel shortened to the correct 10.3".  This will be the route I go with mine in a couple months.  Tastes great, less filling?

Which round were you using?  I've suspected the 40gr VMAX SR197 would be hell on smaller 4-legged varmints like 'yotes.

Yes the vmax round worked pretty good on the yote.

Shameless SBR plug.

I also got a chance to check out the REM T3 illuminator module for those white sights. It works pretty well. So well that I could use the white sight like the black sight I have on my PS90.

I also own a number of ar15 rifles and enjoy shooting all of them however the PS 90 is a completely different platform that tends to really grow on you the more you shoot it. Also everytime I take it out to quad rides or camp outs it is a tremendous hit with all that shoot it. The site takes a little getting used to and the weapon is pricey but is well worth the investment.

I read that people like the PS90 because they are fun and different... I agree.
I also read that the PS90 fills a completely different role than the AR... I agree.

My questions:
What is the intended role of the PS90?
What role(s) is it best suited to?

Thanks.

LonghornAR, love the SBR!
Was it an easy conversion?

The p90 was pretty much a replacement for guns like the mp5. It was really designed for like backline troops. Ie the support troops for military lines(mechanic pools, supply trucks, etc). Thing is said be be a great gun for urban work like clearing rooms. I've shot a full auto p90 style gun before(it was a sbr'd ps90 that was then converted to full auto). You can lay all 50 round on a target without issue. Thing is a mean little fucker.

As far as the SBR conversion of these guns it takes a little bit of work. If you were interested in one I'd probability order a new one that cmmg already replaced the barrel on or something.

The most time consuming part is obviously getting the tax stamp and the engraving done. Regarding the actual barrel swap, it depends on how you go about it. If you want to cut and thread the original barrell, you'll need to find and carefully remove the retaining pin keeping the barrel shroud on the barrel. Since I traded for a P90 barrel and flash hider (which both are available for purchase from CMMG), I just took a hacksaw and cut off the shroud from the barrel. Then it's simple matter of sliding out the old barrel and put the new one in. Installation just takes two different sized wrenches to thread the flash hider onto the barrel. It was a little tricky realigning the captive springs since I didn't have wooden dowel to keep them in place but it wasn't difficult. Time spent for the installation was about 15 minutes.

This, plus NATO was worried about Soviet body armor that a 9mm subgun wouldn't hurt. Hence the 5.7mm AP requirements.

My stock PS90 sight sucks (the reflex sight). I had to buy the USG Rail and install a red dot. The 5.7 ammo is pretty limp compared to 5.56N. The ergonomics of the PS90 aren't up to par with the AR15. Definitely a different gun platform. The PS90 is a fun range toy.
