| I have an AR and would love to get a suppressor for it. I've never purchased any NFA goodies, so all I have is info I've pieced together in my mind. What are the general steps from nothing to suppressor? I'd like to know about going either CLEO or trust. |

What are the general steps from nothing to suppressor? I'd like to know about going either CLEO or trust. Identify suppressor. Identify local Class III FFL if buying non-local. Buy suppressor. ATF paperwork is done b/t where you bought it and local FFL (transfer from one to the other). Get suppressor serial number for Form 4. Fill out Form 4 in duplicate with help from local FFL (and local CLEO if individual for signoff), requires passport-size photos. Get fingerprints - in duplicate Send Form 4 and fingerprint cards in duplicate with Cert. of compliance (citizenship), and $200. WAIT. WAIT. and WAIT. I think that covers it. You can find lots of info online about individual vs. trust, etc. Hope that helps. |

Jondelong pretty much hit it on the head.
Trust is a good route to go for several reasons, but not needing CLEO signoff and fingerprints are two of the main advantages. In states where suppressors are legal but sheriffs are anti-nfa they are a necessity. Personally though, i go individual on all mine, our sheriff has no problem signing off on them. Either way you go, I recommend you request to handle the legwork on the paperwork yourself. YOU complete the forms (you only need your Class3 SOT's signature, EIN# and FFL#), YOU hand it to the sherrif, YOU mail it to the ATF, etc...one bad experience with a Class3 dealer was all it took to see the light on this. It took him four freaking months to send the paperwork to the ATF. It will give you the peace of mind to know things are moving along. I purchased my second suppressor from Silencershop.com. Everything on their end was great. Good selection too. |

As was said, YOU do the leg work. My dealer is a great guy, but quite slow on the paperwork side of things.
I suggest going with a trust because it eliminates a couple of steps, and is good for avoiding hassles if you still have the goodies when you die, if it's set up properly. |

After I pay for it does the FFL hold on to it until the stamp comes in? |

It would be awesome if the local dealer has them in stock...and if he does, absolutely order from them...this will cut a bit of time out of the process, and support local business as well.
However, if they are a display model only, i'd highly suggest having a look around the internet to see if anyone has them in stock. If they're display models only, you're still looking at the 2-4 week transfer process ASSUMING his distributor has them in stock from if you buy from your local guy. If that distributor doesn't have them in stock, you risk adding a good bit of time to an already lengthy process while your dealer waits for them to come back in stock. My suggestion (if the one you want isn't in stock), have a look around for the one you want, you may find it cheaper elsewhere. Even with a transfer fee, an online vendor may sell them at a low enough price to offset the local guy's fee. If you live in a state without an e-commerce sales tax you may be able to save some big $. In any case, you are still controlling the process. Don't hand $700-$1K to someone and assume that they'll work as fast as you would to get your NFA item in your hands. Like i said earlier, CONTROL EVERYTHING, even ordering the suppressor if necessary. |
