Can someone please tell me what is a really good brand for walkie-talkies? I really want a kind that will perform under almost any condition and has a long radius. I have no experience in the walkie talkie area though and wouldn't know a cheap brand's claims from one that was proven to work well. Thanks for your help!

Head over to the survival folks under the general forum. There is a wealth of info about HAM radio and others forms of communications.

"walkie talkies" are line-of-sight items.  Unless the person with whom you are wanting to speak or you is on a hill/mountain, then the best you can reasonably expect, even from Ham radios is about 5-7 miles, IN IDEAL CONDITIONS.

Part of this has to to with the radios, the antennas and the curvature of the earth, along with whatever obstacles are between the two of you.

If you factor in the crappy antenna matching and low effective radiated power of most FRS and even GMRS radios, then you can expect 1-3 miles, depending on terrain, etc.

+1.

There are a number of good brands.  Uniden, Motorola, and Cobra are common brands.  You can get them to go 18-20 miles now I believe, but you need to purchase an FCC license.  They are a somewhat frequent topic in the Survival forum for obvious reasons.
