Hi,
Looking to build a "Strong Room" in the basement corner and have a few simple questions and looking for some experienced answers/direction...  Thanks in advance.

Desires, not neccessarily fort knoxx or fireproof.  Smashproof, secure and fire resistant.

  • Should the wall be cinderblock or is studded construction OK?  The thoughts on the cinder block construction were to mortor the wall together and fill the cavities with instant cement and rebar.  The studded construction was double 2x4 studs sandwiched with cement backer board on top and then 3/4" plywood over that, then perhaps drywall, perhaps not.  Should I pour instant cement in between the studs before I fully plywood over them?

  • I would like to store ammo in here as well and am seriously concerned about random discharge going into the room above (got kids in the house).  How realistic is it that ammo will go off when in a can?  I was looking at the Armorcore ballistic panels available and thought about purchasing some for the ceiling joists.  My other thought was to build an 8" concrete shelf structure and store the ammo below that and other junk on top.  Would the ammo be good underneath that?  If not I think I'm gonna have to relocate the ammo storage portion of the stuff to the garage.

  • Thanks

Don't know about the concrete stuff but unless the ammo is in a rifle it's not too dangerous when it cooks off in a fire.

good fire ax will go through hardy backer quickly.  I would go with cinder block will filled cavities and steel reinforcement wire every course.  It is basically a welded ladder wire that is inside the joints of the block as a reinforcement.  You could also do a poured wall with rebar frame.
