How do you tell the manufacture date?

What do the police, and military approval stamps look like?

What types of ammunition are they reliable with?

Where are good magazines, at a reasonable price?

Anything specific you want to look out for?

What type of lubricant is best? Does grease work okay?
I find the P1 interesting, and just wanted to learn some more about it.

1. The date is stamped on the slide.  It looks like 6/70, or 4/69 as example.
2. Few P1's were used by the police.  They usually got the P-38 marked guns.
3. Use standard type 124 or 115 grain ammo.  NO heavy bullets or hot loads.  These weren't made for hot stuff and it can crack the slide and frame.  Also, NO heavier recoil springs.  They can also cause frame cracking.  Your specific gun may feed hollow points, but be prepared to experiment to find a brand your's will feed.
4. Places like Southern Ohio Guns, Cheaper Then Dirt, and other big sellers usually have magazines.
5 Look out for guns with multiple rebuild stamps or serial numbers "X-ed" out and re-stamped with other numbers to match.
6. Any lube, including grease works fine.  What's important is that you DO lube.

All great advice.

I have a P1 and a few P38s, my only compliant with the surplus P1/P38 is that it shoots way to the left for me. I think I have the wrong front sight.
