Hey everyone, I would like to hear some opinions . I want to invest in a designated rifle. Here are some Requirements. It will have to be reliable, Alot of rounds before any failures. Semi-automatic Able to make distance shots, that are Effective! Not require Match ammo for decent groups. Able to fire on targets 600-700 yards (with decent optics). Not too heavy . Any ideas are appreciated. I hear alot about the lack of effectivness in .223 from carbine barrels. Are 20 inch barrels effective on long range shots? I mean it worries me to be protected by a cartridge that most people wouldn't attempt to take deer with. Thanks everyone! Dave |

FAL, great weapon, very cost efficient, shoots .308, great design, once the main battle rifle for 93 countries I believe. $500-600 AR10, slightly better than the FAL in that it has better setup for scope/optics and controls are barely better than the FAL. Downside, twice the price of a FAL. Can't go wrong either way. |
AR all the way... this gun right here is quite capiable of the requirements you state... just remember maybe to get more of a medium contour barrel if you want to stay light... ![]() if your worried about 600m balistics from 556... just remember that AR's are usally more accuarte that you can even shoot... if you hit someone in the head or chest... they're dead... and since its semi automatic... you'll have 2 rounds in the air before the first one hits... | The FAL is a great platform, and you can freefloat the barrel for better accuracy, or put on a rail-type forend if you prefer. the AR-10 may be twice the price of the FAL but it's worth it if you have the money. Accuracy is superb, and customizability is almost as good as with AR-15s. sorry, but the M1A1 doesnt even come close to being as good as the AR10, even though the cost is about the same. |

The FAL will probably got the longest without cleaning thanks to it's adjustable gas system. you can adjust the valve for a little extra power as the gun gets dirty. a fantastic feature that should be included in every combat rifle. accuracy will depend on what sort of barrel is on the rifle, and whether or not it's free floated. the FAL is known as a fairly accurate weapon, and scopes decently. however, if accuracy is your main consideration, an AR10 should be your choice |

I'm kind of fond of M1-As myself. They're usually accurate enough for what the shooter is capable of and reliable from what I've seen. I want to like the AR-10 as they are accurate and I like the AR platform. I've only been around two and they were not reliable. The problem seemed to be the magazines at the time. Hopefully that situation has been corrected by now. Keith |
