Is it ok to pour water thru and drain it so as to wet the inside of a Gemtech M4-02 before the first round?  Looking to make the first round pop a little quieter and the 2nd shot a little quieter too.

I believe Gemtech says no, the added pressure due to less volume taken up by water and steam pressure is too much for it.

You should not use water (or any ablative) in any centerfire rifle suppressor. While the Gemtech suppressors have the greatest margin of safety in thicker walls in the entrance chamber, many competing designs may well be overly stressed.

Further, considering that the dominant sound of a suppressed .223 is usually the ballistic crack, reducing the relatively small first round pop in these units is probably not significant. If you feel the need to reduce the oxygen in the suppressor, try blowing into it first, as exhaled air has a lower oxygen and higher CO2 content. In Vietnam, the troops with suppressors used a little aerosol insect repellant to displace the O2 and then temporarily sealed the end cap with a postage stamp.
