have one on my 10/22
the 3/8" dove tail rings are not cutting it, will the base accept weaver rings, isn't that what the slots in the rail are for...
or do I need those tip-off rings....?

It will accept any weaver ring. You can also get their cheap tactical base #48335 which has a bunch of cross slots like a picatinny rail for a little more flexibility
