For a general hunting I am either going to get:

a sporterized k98 that is still in 8mm Mauser...

or

I can get a Yugo mauser that has been rebarreled with a 1903A3 barrel and rechambered to .308

There is no both option.

What would you recommend?

.308 is a lot more popular than 8mm both will do the job on deer and other game in that catigory

commercial 8mm is woefully underpowered. I would go .308 unless you reload.  The k98 will probably look better the 308 sounds like an abomination.

I would go .308

I've always heard this, but I don't fully understand it, what do you mean underpowered?

IIRC since there's two sizes of bullets used with 8x57 (.318 for the old spec roundnosed ammo used in the early rifles & .323 for the later spitzer bullet ammo) US ammo companies download their 8x57 so as to not cause a kaBoom (& get them sued) if somebody tries to shoot commercial .323 bulleted ammo out of some old questionable condition rifle with a bore made for the smaller bullet.  Chances are that any mil-surp 8x57 M98 Mauser will be made for the larger bullet, the main worry is the pre M98 Mausers & commercial M98 based sporters made before the change-over to the larger bore.  Euro commercial ammo is spec'd to the hotter "real" 8x57 loading.

I don't reload, and this depresses me.

Yup, this is pretty much the answer.  Shoot some commercial loads out of a K98 and then shoot some 198gr surplus out of the same gun. You can tell a difference.

Sorry, OP!

How did they rechamber an existing 03A3 barrel to .308?

Also, why not look at a Savage in .308 as opposed to either one of those?

You can get a Savage Edge/Axis in .308 (or .30-06 or .223) that is gonna be at least as accurate as either of those for less than $300.

I didn't think that you had to rechamber anything as the .308 and .30-06 have the same round dimensions of "7.62"

As for the savage question, the rifles above are less than $200 and the entry level Savage Edge/Axis are $350+ around here.

.30-06 round and chamber is a good bit longer than .308.  I guess they could have used an insert.

$350?  Damn, that's kind of high.  My .30-06 model cost me about $270 or so after taxes.

The changeover was in 1904 as I recall.  It's the reason we switched to the 30-06 from the 30-03.  Finding a rifle chambered in the older .318 spec in this country is about as likely as finding a rifle chambered in 30-03 instead of -06.

For the OP, I'd get the .308 between those two.

I'm thinking the .308, though after getting a chance to shoot a Swedish Mauser, I'm really wanting a rifle in 6.5 swede

You cannot go wrong with 6.5. It will do anything you need it to.  There is a guy in the C&R section of the EE selling a mauser Action. Buy it and get a 6.5 barrel for it. You can't go wrong.

what kind of modifications would I have to make to the 8mm action/bolt?

You should not have to do anything to the action itself.  It will probably work just fine without much modification.  However, I do not knot the diameter of the case head on 8mm or 6.5.  Sometimes you can get away without modding the extractor.

Brownells sells tons of Mauser barrels.  You'll just have to get it installed and reamed.  After that you should be gtg. There may be more work involved, I don't know.  Shoot Hardrock a PM and tell him I sent you. He should be able to help you out with answers and can probably do the work as well. Hope that helps.

I'd go with the Mauser because I don't care for sporterized rifles. If you're not reloading, what are you waiting for? Sellier and Bellot 8mm ammo is loaded to the original specs, i.e. not downloaded for safety reasons.

So I went ahead and got the .308 mauser.
pics may be found here

How should I got about scoping the rifle with what mount and rings?

not to mention I want to finish making this gun look nice, like a 1950's era sporter, what should I do?

More loads are available in .308. Either will kill anything.
