Ok, so I am in the midst of restoring my sporterized No 4 Mk 1/3 to Mk 2 spec. I ordered a used butt from Numerich and it came covered in this black sticky shit that will not come off!!! I've tried oven cleaner, mineral spirits, lighter fluid. The steel wool and scraper are ever so slowly is getting it off.
What is this stuff? Is there a faster way to clean it off without beating up the wood? |

It's probably "British Gun Black" paint. Acetone will eventually make it soft and rubbery, but boiling water will work and be less nasty to deal with. It is pretty tough stuff. ![]() Yes it will, but DO NOT use a vessel that you care about. It will be easier to get a new stock. |
Thanks for the info. I kept at it for a little bit, just to see how much work it really was......... yea, not worth it.
@ madcratebuilder - Do you have other parts for No4 Mk2's besides the butts? I have some more things coming in the mail, but so far all that I have gotten has been pretty crappy. |
| Check springfield sporters. Though if you wish to purchase parts from them just print an order form write what you want on it and your card number and mail it. Then, wait about a week and you will have your parts. Never could get them on the phone. Fast turn around good parts they are gtg. |
