In every thread, almost every post, pertaining to "what's the best" or "your ideal" shotgun the word reliable or reliability turns up.  What is a reasonable definition of "reliable" in this application and how do you test for it?

There is no 100% "reliable" shotgun, or any firearm, for that matter.  I've seen every gun mentioned on this an other forums have stoppages at one time or another, even the vaunted Benelli M4.  Nothing man-made is 100% foolproof, but what criteria make a shotgun "reliable" for you?

IMO, there are three components of a shotgun system:  the gun, the ammo, and the shooter.  Most of the malfunctions or stoppages I've seen are related to either the ammo, the shooter or a improperly maintained weapon which to me falls back to the shooter.  Very seldom, although all of us have seen parts breakage, is the problem the actual fault of a properly set up an maintained gun.

What are the parameters or criteria for your HD or combat shotgun?

Pull the trigger, it goes "bang".  That's pretty much all I ask in the reliability department.  The rest is up to me.  The only other criterion I have for my HD gun is that it be short as my house is old and has narrow hallways and smallish rooms.
