What scope should I put on my FAL. I want to buy a scope and rings that wont break the bank and will maximize the distance the rifle can actually shoot with Aussie or Port ammo. Oh yeah I'm also in CA. and since I can't drop the mag out I'm using a DSA stripper clip scope mount. So I would need a scope with rings that would sit low on the rifle.  |

My 4x Hensoldt sits on an ARMS #5 weaver/stanag adaptor, scope is 8' so you'd have to be able to live with it hanging out back. The 2x Aimpoint is 6.5" and has no eye relief issues all the way up to 'point blank scope eye'. PS- I assume you run a std rec with a 10rnd mag just welded in? Just curious about the legal workaround out there... |

The rifle is a Imbel Gear Logo receiver with all DSA parts. Was a T48 clone with all the wood but I ended up selling the wood and going all black with the rifle. As far as the mag goes just to be on the safe side the previous owner drilled and riveted the mag in place. So no welds. Only way to get the mag out now is to drill the rivet out. My breaking the bank would be in the $300 range. |

Given that setup (limited space/short eye relief), your requirements (magnification to make use of the cartridges range) and budget, I'd go with the original sight designed for that rifle; a Trilux SUIT. It was the ACOG of the 1970's. Dead reliable, 4x power, illuminated (capable), and sufficiently militant in appearance. This one, from the link, is IDF surplus and the BDC is for 5.56, but the cam is the same as the 7.62 cam, and they have a picatiny mount available for it. I believe gunthings has the 7.62 version, but you'll spend an extra $100 and you'll have to buy another mount.

So I think I found a good deal. I just picked up a DSA Extended Scope Mount for $30 and a Barska Swat Extreme Tactical 8-32x44 IR scope for $100 grand total of $130. Did I make a good buy? I should have the scope and scope mount sometime this week. I'll post pictures as soon as I get it. |

Are you going to load the rifle through the ejection port? That scope is over 15 inches long and the mount will not allow you to stripper clip load nor would the scope. I'm not getting what you are going to be doing. Only time will tell on the scope quality but I think 8-33 is way overkill for the FAL. You have a very limited field of view and the long end is almost absurd. Personally, 10x would have been as far as I would go. The optic I have liked so far the best is a 1.75-6x33 Leupold VX-III. I've been able to make it sing out to 300yds easy. |
+1. How are you gonna load the rifle? Have you ever looked through a Barska? Honestly, I would rather have one of the $99 Nikon 3-9x40 Prostaff scopes on the sample list. |

Since I bought the DSA extended scope mount I plan on loading the rifle through the ejection port. I've actually tried this with another FAL and it wasnt to bad. Plus haha it will make the ammo last a little longer at the shooting range. If I get tired of loading it from the ejection port I can always go to my back up FAL which is a DSA SA58 Carbine with stripper clip mount and Eotech 552. As for the scope its $100 so I can't complain. I never tried using a scope before so I figure I'll learn with this one then spend the money on a real nice scope when I decide to buy a bolt action. If I think I made a mistake I can always re-sell the scope to someone who needs it. |
Well, good luck with it. For paper punching the FAL really isn't the most satisfying platform so I'd see that massive magnification as a net disadvantage but if you enjoy it and it works for ya so be it. For $130.00 there are worse mistakes you could make I'm sure.

ARMS mount + Aimpoint + FAL = Goodness. With that combo you can own 0 to 200+ yds. Very quick target aqusition and no paralax error due to eye position. Get a used Aimpoint off the Equipment Exchange and if you don't like it you can sell it for what you paid for it I'd bet. I only wish I still had the money I wasted on cheap scopes over the years. | I just put a Millet DMS-1 1-4X scope in a LaRue 1.5 mount on to my SA58 FAL. The scope definitely meets your requirement of being <$300. The glass is surprisingly clear for the price of the scope. I've been pleasantly surprised. The Millet DMS-1 gets my recommendation. |
How do you like that setup? Is it high in the LaRue? Heavy? I've been looking hard at that scope lately for my para, waffling between it and an Aimpoint 7000SC 2X2 |
I was concerned that it might sit too high in the LaRue as well...I'm still able to keep a good cheekweld with this setup...I still need to get used to the setup, but I'm liking it more and more. |
