So I recently found the box of a dozen forged AR lower blanks, that I bought 15 years (or more) ago, and I thought to myself, "Self? If we build a lower, only for use with a .50 upper, we don't have to take out half the metal. No need for a mag well, or mag release. Just the trigger group, pivot and take down pin points, and crap. We'd still have to do the buffer tube mount, for the stock."

What self, and I, are having a bit of argument over, is the upper. I'm thinking a used upper that isn't all shot out would be fine. Self wants to spend money, "to get the best there is!"

"But, Self!" I cried. "Price IS an issue! 'Cause I ain't got deep pockets!"

Self, and I agreed, that it would be a good idea, to ask Y'all Folksies, for your opinions.

So. If you had a hard limit, of say, $1200.00 for a .50 BMG upper, what would YOU get for the build?

Safety Harbor or a Ferret, you will most likely be spending more than $1200 for an upper even used. So you may want to rethink your budget a bit. Also since you seem like you are trying to go cheap, consider that the cheapest 50 BMG unless you reload is about $3.50 per shot.

Great advice all the way around!

Safety Harbor is what I went with but the total comes to just a hair over $1500 brand new.

I have a Bohica and am happy with it.  I would assume that if you bought one used you could get it for around $1000.  I think the new ones (VOW) are still reasonable but, I don't think they sell the uppers seperately anymore.

If I go for a NEW upper, I would most likely choose the Safety Harbor. At $1500.00, new, I would expect $1200.00 is a more than fair price for a USED S.H. upper.
The A.L.R.S. looks nice, but at $2400.00 (+), it is more than I want to go.

Maybe this is all just a pipe dream, because I do know just how expensive each shot is, even if you DO reload your own. This would be the "special occasion," gun, that only came out for exactly that.

"You think my Mauser kicks? Try THIS!"

Still,I already know I will be shooting it (IF this project comes together). I just LOVE, the "BOOM!"

Smorgousford, that is a SWEET rifle. Almost EXACTLY what I am envisioning. Even to the Desert Tan color.

Rotty, I'm not trying to sound stupid, here, but, (I know I do, asking) from the photo you posted, it almost looks like the bolt retracts ABOVE the buffer tube?

And, Donmopar, yes, a used BOHICA, or some such, is what I was thinking.
