I have a buddy looking for one who asked me to help him research the one to get. I've suggested broadening his search to include Serbu, but he has insisted that Ronnie Barrett is going to be the one to earn his business. His $$$, his choice.

Should he consider the bolt action M95?  I was told to stick w/ the semi auto because of the recoil dampening system.

He's not particularly price sensitive, so spending the coin to get the right one is more important than saving a few grand.

What do you think? M82A1? M107A1? Here's hoping my research will result in some range time.

What is he shooting at? Car size targets at 1200 yds or man size targets at 1200??

If you asked him, he'd say societal breakdown or zombie attack. My guess is paper from a few hundred yards away.  I think he's more interested in having one as an insurance policy against the possibility of a ban.

A prospective ban has been proposed in our states legislature and endorsed by a certain governor (R)  who struggles with his weight and is intent on destroying his chance of ever winning a national Republican primary. I wish I had the $$$ on hand to buy one myself.

Well you can't go wrong with an M82. Big, heavy, loud and holds 10 rounds. Notice I left out something???  "Accuracy".... You can will hit larger targets with an M82 but they are well known for lack of MOA... Just sayn... 55gallon drums or larger targets at 1000yds?? Sure..  Ball or API ammo was when I bought it was a buck a runs for LC ammo. Don't know what's it going now..

If he wants the status symbol of the 82A1 style,  tell him to go for it. I would get the Serbu semi.

Get the semi first, for insurance. Then get a M99 for better accuracy later. For the price of a 95, I'd step into a 82/107.

The semi has much easier recoil, if that matters. Although I have had females shoot the 99 with no problems.

With a semi auto Barret the trade off is accuracy. Semis from what I have seen are about 2MOA, Some bolt actions are sub .75 MOA, but for sure sub 1MOA. So that's the question I would ask him. 1 in = 10 in at 1000yds. So semi auto your looking at 20 in, at 1000yds is that good enough for him?

2 MOA is pretty generous for a lot of the semis. Sure, some of them give very good accuracy. But that is the exception, not the norm.
The bolt guns get very good accuracy. But it also goes into who built it and how much care they put into headspacing and other aspects of the building.

The same person doesn't build the rifle all the way up at Barrett. One person may do  a step to a bunch of rifles, someone else may do something else.
Assembly line process with custom prices.

If I were going to do it again I would have just kept my 99. The 82 is always sought after though and is a good gun in its own right.

Like someone said above with the price of a 95 I would just get the 82 unless accuracy is his goal. The 99 is a good value and I could shoot it fairly quickly
