[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Which MP5 Clone? (Page 1 of 2)

I may have a little money coming from the sale of a car soon and since my AR collection is pretty much complete I am looking at picking up an HK clone.  Specifically a MP5 rifle that I can either transfer as a SBR on a form 4 or that I can SBR on a form 1.  What companies are producing quality clones and which ones should I avoid?  Also would like to get some info on what pricing should be like.  Any reason to avoid the collapsible (A3?) stocks?

its been addressed several times but ...GUillebear and PCS does great work , Dakota Tactical is what I have (2 year wait I think), DJF is getting good . Turner out of AZ (never returned my calls or emails).
IF you get a Coharie be prepaired to get it worked and replace parts . over at the hkpro.com forum you get a nice review an selection of H&K fans

Not only that but he has great customer service and turn around times, had mine in like 3 weeks and he welded a rail on it, worth the few extra bucks

why not get a pistol version and just add a stock after the F1? It seems easier and possibly cheaper then having to replace or cut the barrel to get the barrel length you want.

Find an MKE, it an HK licensed MP5 made in Turkey. Great guns and can be found for about $1500 to 2K in the current market.

It sounds like he was looking for either a factory SBR or doing just that pistol on form 1 to SBR route . at least thats how i understood it , and I think none of the companies i listed actually
make SBR's I think they make pistols you have to form 1

The part in red is what made me think he was not looking at the pistol route:

Since the OP never mentioned a pistol, i took it to mean he was still talking about a rifle.
At this point, only the OP can clarify for us what he meant.

I would look for an MKE if I could find one.

If not I would have Jeff Walters or Turner Fab build you one.  I have all 3 and they are all first class.  I would assume build times are loooooong these days.

I don't think MP5 pistols are approved in MD (handgun roster and all that) which is why I am looking at rifles only.

Been perusing HKpro.com (their site layout sucks btw, guess Arfcom has me spoiled) and I'm thinking PCS/Ghilliebear might be the way to go.  Will I need to piece together the parts on my own and send them to him or do these guys typically source their own parts and then assemble?  Never thought starting on a new platform would be this much of a PITA

Dakota, Ghillie, or DJF will all make a fine clone.

I have a DJ Getz PDW clone bought new from him back in December and I love it. I think you can put a 50% deposit down on one of his builds right now over on HK Pro. ETA should just be a month or two compared to a much longer wait from the other builders.

I will say that it was my first MP5 style gun though, so I don't have much to base my knowledge on. Have a CA94 rifle with RCM bolt on its way to me as we speak, so I guess I can compare those two clones. Right now I'd honestly jump on anything [quality] in stock that is listed at a half decent price.

Then you'll need to drop $2000 on one and buy a Ghilliebear or Chopstix build. Maybe a Turner build.

I got my Cohaire for less than $900.  Add in cost of new RCM bolt head ($200) and I'm still under $1100 and I think I've had 1 FTEject.  I've personally put nearly 500 rounds through it, over the last 2 months, so it isn't exactly a safe queen.

If I could find a Cohaire 89K under $1300, I'd buy it in a second, even if I knew I had to replace the bolt head.

Its paid for, but I dont get to take possession until my stamp comes back some time in August .
Special Weapons SW5 9mm ,  runs great accepts all mags  H&K and Korean without any issues and its the solid steel receiver not the stamped receiver so it built like a tank . I got to run about 200 rds thru it at my dealers before I bought it and had no issues Its one of the 2000 model years so I believe its one of the earlier ones  .  Lots of fun and the wait is killing me . Oh well when it comes back it should have my other stamp with it , nothing like getting 2 at a time , Makes ya smile real big :D

$1,000 will not buy an HK clone that works like a genuine HK right out of the box.

Consider buying something else with your $1k

My CA89 and CA89k had problems. The CA89k had BIG problems! If I were to do it over my money would have went to a reputable smith for the a build. It'll cost more but should work with no quirky problems. Even now, my CA89k will not accept a trident 3 lug mount (hits the triple tree) and won't accept a #28 LP event with -8 rollers. The bolt gap is too big. So far I've invested $500+ into getting the CA89k fixed. I will have to live with the two problems I just mentioned.

The little roller lockers fall on a spectrum between:

Cheap(er) and Reliable

Except cheap(er) starts at over a grand.  Expect reliable to start at $1500 if you're lucky, with base platform plus mods.  Right around $2k is where "this will run right out of the box" starts, plus or minus a bit.  I have a later CA94 that runs 100% after replacing the cocking tube support and the action spring, plus the soft firing pin and the rough ejector, although it worked fine with the original versions of the last two parts.  The pack was rough, and needed some love. It runs 100%

I have a Dave Getz k that runs great out of the box, and looks great.  It's more picky feeding hollow points than the CA, unless I'm using a real HK curved mag.  Then it's 100%.  It's 100% on ball with anything.

I only have a .308 roller locker from Ghillie, but he's done all my paddle installs.  His stuff runs.

I need to get on the list with Joe...I just keep changing my mind on what configuration I want, but his stuff is gorgeous.

The MKE guns work great, but in order to SBR, you have to get compliant, and at that point, you can afford a Joe or Ghillie gun.  They also don't work with FA packs, if that matters to you.

Depending on how much you've paid for the MKE it's easy to come in under the cost of one from Joe, Ghillie's price point might be harder to beat I grant you that.

Also if you weld up a HK semi style shelf over the MKE's pivot pin hole you can remove the FA carrier block and get happy with a registered sear or pack.

Yeah the 628 barely clears the faux suppressor. Surefire makes A15 and A17 adapters that offset the light so that the bezel is further from the muzzle. Not sure if I want to drop $50 on one of those or just use my regular smooth forend for when I shoot suppressed.

ETA: some of those look like Korean mags. What did you do to them in order to make them fit better into the magwell?

Filed on the feed lips mainly and a few other spots. They fit fine with the bolt back, but with the bolt forward the lips in the bottom of the bolt.

Nope

My plan is to order that along with the stock set once I get my form 1 back.

For now I'm using the octane on my glock 19

I does look lonely. The main reason I went with the pistol version was so I could use the octane with it, but damn I wish it had a stock instead at this point.
