Hi all, got my '53 HRA and Im going to be doing some cmp clinics soon and need a sling. Im looking to try and stay historically accurate but would like something that functions well too. Any suggestions?

Take my advice for what it's worth.  I've never shot an M1 personally (M14 though I have, so close) but am planning on getting one in the next month or so.  What I can say is that I shot my first Appleseed last month and used a cotton "Garand" sling on my .22 and must say it is extremely functional.  I'm guessing it would be a period accurate sling for your rifle and should work quite well.  Not to mention they can be had in the $10-15 range.

Good luck and enjoy your rifle!

Yes, the cotton GI sling works very well. Youtube has a couple vids on how to use it. If you want to go leather, Turner Saddlery makes the best, costs almost $60. I bought a Springfield Armory leather sling and was disappointed. Thin leather, painted hooks, cheap rivets. My friend's MRT sling he got at the gunshow for around $30 was much better. E-bay sometimes has the MRT slings for a fair price.

they used the usgi leather sling throughout the m-1's service less in korea era than ww2 but it was still around. the leather sling is the way to go for easy on and off and repeated adjustments for different shooting positions

I have the cotton/canvas sling and it works well.  Put the snap on the buttstock and you can pop it off to shoot prone with a sling.  Works well.  Older Springfield slings work well too. Maybe the new springers are not as nice.  Don't waste your time on Cheaper than dirt slings.  They look OK at first inspection, but are made of cheap materials, the leather doesn't look right, color is off, thickness is off etc.

Brownells has a decent variety of leather slings as well.  They also have a synthetic one they claim doesn't stretch like leather.
