Going to keep it simple for more discussion, why did you choose a .50 bmg?
5/2/2008 11:25:56 AM EDT
[#1]
Because I can now and may not be able to in the near future. Oh...it is a blast (No pun intended) to shoot the ultimate long range rifle.

[#2]
Simply because I wanted one.   And the fact that they are most likely next on the ban list. I got mine years ago now, been nothing but fun ever since.  Nothing like the .50.

[#3]
For many reasons:

- Was (at the time) in the crosshairs for being banned at state and federal levels
- Ammunition readily available in a variety of flavors from many sources
- Incredible range!
- Undeniably fun!!!
- Able to purchase the Barrett M82 that is a current rifle used on a large scale by the US military

Oh yeah...and the WOW factor!
(otherwise known as the "50 BMG grin")

...to name a few.

Fun to shoot factor is at the top of the list!

If you have to ask, you don't understand.....

But seriously, if you are questioning whether or not you want a 50 BMG, you probably don't have the commitment to buy, scope, and handload ammo.  Everything 50 BMG is expensive, even considering what other ammo costs now.  Primers are 10x as much, brass is often 5x as much, bullets cost 4-5x as much, etc etc.

Buying a 50 is a personal thing and all the reasons mentioned above are definitely valid.

You might get more value from a more pointed question.

Cause I can't afford a 20mm!
5/3/2008 3:34:41 AM EDT
[#9]
1) Because a 25mm MK 38 MOD 2 Chaingun is not legal.
2) Because I want to put half inch holes in things.
3) Because with Chris Rosequist from Bohica Arms offering uppers for around $1,000 as the intro price at the time I figured I had to have one.
4) The fun factor.
5) I seriously want to devastate game, so with the Barnes .510 TSX bullets and a light weight rifle like the FAR-50, can't go wrong.
6) If they are not banned, I plan on possibly adding a Ferret 50, and a Serbu 50 to my collection as well.
7) I was planning on getting a 338-378 Weatherby magnum, till I found out I could go even bigger into the funfilled world of the 50 caliber and be able to reload and shoot, or for the initial buying of ammo, the 50 is cheaper by far.
8) And finally, because I wanted a boom stick that could make a 12 gauge shotgun pale in comparison.

You are brand new here on arfcom and you are asking a question that VPC would ask. Are you some anti-gun activists trying to make a case against 50cals?

VPC stands for violence policy center the most anti-gun, communists, anti-constitution organization trying to take away our 2nd.

I think David said it best if you have to ask on this forum you are someone that would raise a big question as to your intent.

I can only speak for myself.

1. It's my Constitutional Right.
2. I wanted one.
3. Anti 2nd Amendment pin heads saying I should not be allowed to own one. (I hate people who try to tell me what I should and should not own.)

See, you fell right into their trap.  They want you to think they don't want you to have one and that they'll be banned in the near future.  That way they create a buying frenzy, thus pumping money back into the economy.  Plus, they are ensuring that US citizens are well-armed in case of a domestic attack.  [/fantasy]

Because when I was a little boy my father gave me a WWII swagger stick made from a 50 BMG round (long chromed tube between bullet and case). It was my destiny.

The wife wanted it. Seriously, she got to shoot a m82a1 a few weeks ago and just had to have one.

Well I bought my M82 to ensure my familys safety against packs of wild goats and squirrels.  Also I wanted to make big holes in things a long way away.

I always loved the 30-06  paticularly the M1 Garand . The 30-06 is one of the most versital rounds .

When I first took a close look at the 50 BMG Cartridge  it looked like a big 30-06 so what can I say I am hooked .

I could not live without it.

It is beautiful!!!

Same reason people buy motorcycles, classic cars or collect stamps and coins. Because it "floats your boat".

...and watching the muzzle blast from an Armalite AR-50 clear a shooting bench is fun too

(Don't want to get into a pro/anti-gun conversation...but) I noticed your location, join date and post count. Firearms, more accurately labeled as weapons...along with anything else that could harm or kill you (the cars we drive, that drink in your hand or the tobacco product your thinking about)...are an acquired taste with respect to use and collection of them. I think somebody purchasing a sail boat, or classic car, and utilizing it once a year is a strange thing...but not to the one who purchased it and enjoys it. Weapons, firearms specifically, aren't anything but a fancy paperweight...a tool, an implement, until you put a mind behind it's use. Could say this for anything a human being can operate or manipulate. We have the luxury to owning them...so we will...and many serve in a capacity that allows this freedom...and the backbone for countless others...to continue. When we eliminate automobiles, alcoholic beverages (we tried that remember) and tobacco products I'll take a good look at moving away from my hobby.

Bravo

Nothing turns heads when you fire a 50, especially when your at a range where people like to fire alot of 22LR.

Plus I always wanted one and well, Now I do.
Plus its just damn sexy!

This Wastetalent guy is almost certainly an anti-gunner or else he'd have stopped back by and posted on his thread.  I think he's just gathering data of VPC.

Why not really. Just another gun. Pretty much the same cost of a 338 (rifle & ammo) with a tad more range I suppose.
Except there is fun ammo for it.  This is America, bigger is better, not matter what science says! This is psuedo-science
