Hi Guys,

I need some pointers on using the Wilson trimmer. Every time I trim, I cannot get consistant lengths. Actually they are always too short. My 223 brass ends up being 1.740 - 1.748.
I have adjusted the threaded stop endlessly. Always have used the shark fin attachment.

1 or 2 light turns, not short enough, too many turns too short.

Any advice or tips. Tired of ruining brass.

No experience with a Wilson trimmer.

I have used the RCBS and Forester trimmer, is it similar to those?

have used the shark fin attachment. No idea what you are talking about.

With the RCBS trimmer, cranking speed and how hard you press against the stop must be consistent to get repeatable results.

Post a pic of your trimmer if you can.

I've been thinking of buying a Wilson trimmer, so BTT.

I use one.
Whats the shark fin attachment?
Im having a hard time picturing what your having trouble with.
I set my stop and use the same pressure/turns for each case.
Before I trim I group the brass by length so I can set the proper stop for that group of casings which makes it easier for me.

I think the "shark fin" attachment is the "PTG Trimmer base" used by this trimmer.  All it does is holds the trimmer up high and allows the whole thing to be clamped to a table.

I would guess you are pushing the case holder toward the cutter inadvertantly.  The Wilson is crazy consistant so I am guessing its your technique.

I don't get any variation in brass length with my Wilson, you have to be pushing the brass away from the adjustment screw.

After adjusting the screw that sets cutting depth and you are turning the jam nut to lock in the setting, you have to hold the adjustment screw or the jam nut will cause it to go out of adjustment a little.

You are adjusting the screw to set the depth of cut, right?

I have used a Wilson for years and love it.  First, make sure the adjustment screw is clean, no brass shavings between it and the case head.  Second, hold the case with pressure toward the adjustment screw.  Finally, make sure the case head isn't bent where the extractor pulled it from the chamber.  This will give you fits, my FAL eats case heads in soft brass and will throw measurments off.

I agree with the above suggestions.

I would add.

Make sure case is seated in the shell holder completely. I tap the case in and tap it out.
Make sure the case and shell holder are firmly in place before locking in place the 'shark fin'.

The Wilson is THE end all be all manual trimmer.

No, the shark fin is a lever that swings over the case holder and locks it down to the trimmer.
